Конспект урока "Leisure activities of British and Russian teenagers"

Our lives would be hard without rest and recreation!

Teenagers have quite different ideas of how to spend their leisure time. For some of them the only way to relax is watching TV or sleeping. But other teenagers use their leisure time to do a great number of interesting things.

It can be reading, various types of sport games, dancing, listening to music and so on.

So, today in the lesson we will:

● talk about leisure activities of British and Russian teenagers;

And

● put the knowledge into practice.

There is a great variety of leisure pursuits in Great Britain. On Friday or Saturday nights young people usually go out to a disco, to a concert or to a pub. They can also go out for a meal at a restaurant or at a café or bring a takeaway meal home.

During the last years there is a great increase in keeping fit and staying healthy. Nowadays it’s becoming more and more popular among young people to lead a healthy lifestyle.

A lot of teens started walking, running, jogging and going to different fitness clubs in their spare time. Aerobics classes and fitness clubs opened in every town. The number of recreation centres greatly increased. Indoor and outdoor pools, with their wave-making machines and water slides, have become very popular too.

The famous British eccentricity is the cause of unusual sports like extreme ironing, for example, mountains, rivers, tall buildings, etc. Of course, not all British teens keep fit by engaging in extreme sports.

After-school clubs are also popular today. Most secondary schools in Great Britain have them. The activities include:

drama,

music,

cooking,

coding,

board games,

photography and so on.

The clubs are usually free!

At weekends young teenagers sometimes go to their friend’s house and stay there till morning. This is called a sleepover and it’s particularly popular with girls.

Some British teenagers often stay at home in their free time. They usually watch TV, play computer games and surf the Net.

Now let’s read on the forum how some British teenagers spend their leisure time.

Max, 15 years old

Hi. I’m Max and I strongly believe that hobbies make our lives much more interesting. I’m sure that every person can always find an exciting activity which he or she will certainly like. Personally, I am fond of camping. To my mind, it’s a great opportunity to get away from town life. What is more, camping is a cheap way to rest, to improve your health, to train yourself physically and to enjoy nature.

Amber, 13 years old

Hello, I’m Amber. When I have leisure time, I usually do a lot of interesting things. I enjoy reading, playing the guitar, doing sports, dancing and listening to music. Most of my classmates say that they are too busy or too tired to do anything in their free time. But I am sure that such people are just lazy and passive and their lives are boring and uneventful.

Tom, 16 years old

Hi, everyone. My name is Tom. In my free time I usually go to Kids’ Cookery Club. A chef comes to our school twice a week and we learn how to cook. I really enjoy it! We make pizzas, cakes, biscuits and other things. The lessons are free, but our parents have to pay for the ingredients. After the lesson we eat all the food, so I have my dinner at school. That’s really cool!

Ella, 14 years old

Hello, I’m Ella. I usually don’t have any spare time during the weekdays. But at the weekends I often have a sleepover. My best friend Amy comes to stay at my house or I go to her house for the night. We usually watch horror or adventure films and eat pizza. When we go to bed, we always talk for hours. Amy and I have lots of fun together!

Now let’s talk about leisure activities of Russian teenagers.

A lot of teens in Russia go in for different kinds of sports. Sport helps them to feel as fit as a fiddle.

Walking is one of the most popular leisure activities. Russian teenagers like to walk in the parks or around the city centre. Organized walking is also popular and is a good way to discover local sights of interest with a group of likeminded friends and a good guide.

Cycling is another popular activity. There are no long-distance cycle trails in Russia. That’s why teens ride a bicycle on low-traffic streets or find quiet country roads and spend their time exploring their homeland.

Many teenagers are fond of going to the gym, swimming pools or fitness classes.

Despite the increase in the number of teens participating in sports, the majority of young people still prefer to be spectators. Watching sports on TV is a popular leisure activity.

Cinemas have been redesigned with four or more screens, each showing a different film at the same time. That’s why a lot of teens like going to the cinemas too.

A young generation is fond of communication. The most popular methods of communication nowadays are a computer and a mobile phone. A lot of teenagers spend plenty of time chatting with their friends or talking to them on the phone.

Now listen to Nikita. He would like to tell you about his way of spending free time.

“Hello. I’m Nikita and I’m 15 years old. I spend all my leisure time looking after my pets. I’ve got a dog, a cat, a parrot and a hamster. As you can understand, I’m really crazy about animals.

I am fond of training my dog. It has already learned to obey such commands as: sit, lie down, stand up, speak and jump.

I enjoy singing with my parrot and playing with my cat and hamster. I also like to watch television programmes about animals and to read books about them. Why am I so interested in animals? Perhaps it’s because I’m rather shy in my heart of hearts. And I like my pets, because they will never think that I’m silly or betray me.”

Guys, you’ve just listened to Nikita talking about his way of spending free time. Now…

Read the sentences and say if they are true or false. Correct the false sentences!

See you soon!
