- Let’s learn some more interesting facts about the largest island and the smallest continent in the world. Be ready to answer my questions concerning every aspect of the problem.
As early as the 15th century it was believed that a large southern continent existed and in the 16th century geographers showed it on their maps. In the 17th century a number of travelers, mostly Dutch, visited the continent.
Captain Cook’s visits in 1770 and 1772 - 1775 opened the continent for the English.
Experience the ageless splendour of aboriginal culture expressed in rock paintings and carvings or enjoy contemporary culture.
It is very interesting to learn about the Dreamtime and hear the creation stories of this great land.
Aboriginal spirituality centers around Dreamtime, a time running parallel to the life we know. It also refers to the time when the Earth was created by spirit ancestors. They believe that Dreaming tracks, laid down by spirit ancestors, delineate tribal boundaries and each group’s place of belonging. One key reason Aboriginal leaders request people not to climb Uluru or Ayres Rock is that it passes over one of these Dreaming tracks.
A major part of the Aboriginals' creation story revolves around the Rainbow Serpent. Also called the Rainbow Snake, the mythological being is in charge of life’s most precious resource, water. The serpent protects people and punishes law breakers. Sometimes unpredictable, the Serpent vies with the ever reliable Sun. It slithers around the landscape, forming deep channels and gullies that allow for the collection of water. Mythology differs from climate – but is linked to land, water, life, relationships and fertility.
Australia is a land of striking differences. In the centre of the continent and in the West more than 50% of the land is desert - dry & uninhabited. Naturally very few people live there. Most of them live on narrow coasts of the east & south - east. In the north - east tropical forests cover the coast. In the mountains of the south - east the snow lies for seven months of the year.
Sometimes Australia is called , , the upside down world’’ because it lies in the Southern Hemisphere, where winter comes in July and summer begins in December. During the Christmas holidays people often sunbathe on the beach or swim & surf in the ocean. Australia is the hottest place in the Southern Hemisphere. In July the temperature is from 12 to 20. In January - from 20 to 30 c above zero or higher.
