Teacher asks students to read the title of the text (Spotlight 8, p.10), elicits the meaning of the phrase ‘tobreaktheice’: What does it mean?

Students read the definition given on dictionary.cambridge.org (BREAK THE ICE /informal/ to make people who have not met before feel more relaxed with each other) and discuss ‘break the ice’ in example sentences.
