The role and importance of teaching Phrasal Verbs in English

Phrasal Verbs
Phrasal verbs = verb + particle
The particle looks like a
Preposition, but it doesn’t
function as a preposition.
He woke up at 6:30 a.m.
Strangers woke him up .
Particles
Particles are part of the verb phrase, and they often change the meaning of the verb.

He looked up at the skyscraper.

She looked up a word in her dictionary.
take off
Using Phrasal Verbs
Many phrasal verbs and one-word verbs have similar meanings.
wake up = awaken
go on = continue
take off = remove
Phrasal verbs are less
formal and more common
in everyday speech.
Transitive Phrasal Verbs 1
Transitive phrasal verbs have objects . Most transitive phrasal verbs are separable .

He called up his boss to tell him he had overslept.

He called his boss up to tell him he had overslept.
Transitive Phrasal Verbs 2
The object can come after the phrasal verb or between the verb and the particle.
At the last minute, the bride called off the wedding.
No wedding!

At the last minute, the bride called the wedding off .

Be Careful!
When the object is a pronoun , it must come between the verb and the particle.
A friend called up her at work.

A friend called her up at work.

Use each of the phrasal verbs to form three sentences about things that sometimes happen.

Intransitive Phrasal Verbs 1
Intransitive phrasal verbs do not have objects.

Intransitive Phrasal Verbs 2
Intransitive phrasal verbs do not have objects.

First I worked out for an hour.
Then I dressed up and dropped in at the party.
No one found out that I didn’t have an invitation!
Be Careful!
N ote the difference in meaning between make, make up (transitive), and make up (intransitive).
I make dinner every night.
I make up dinner every night.
He made up a story about Jill and Joe.
make up = invent (transitive)
They made up . They were friends again.
make up = reconcile (intransitive)
What happens before and during a party? Make sentences using the transitive and intransitive phrasal verbs.

The difficulties of phrasal verbs
In many cases the meaning of the phrasal verb can not be deduced from its element. It is being used idiomatically.
Many phrasal verbs are polysemous, they have more than one meaning.
There are difficulties with the grammar of phrasal verbs, particularly with the position of the particles.

Phrasal verbs are used much more between native speakers than between non-native speakers.
Phrasal verbs are used much more in informal than in formal written communication.
Phrasal verbs can make communication quicker, easier and more relaxed.
Common phrasal verbs often use common verbs.
Most phrasal verbs have a twin: a regular verb which has a similar meaning.
10 things you about phrasal verbs
Many phrasal verbs have a literal and idiomatic meaning.
Learning lists of phrasal verbs is not effective for many learners.
Knowing which type of phrasal verb can be effective.
Learning them little and often verb according to context is effective.
Cheer up! Phrasal verbs are not that difficult to learn.
