Dear friends! The week of documentary films, which we held last month, attracted lots of attention. Today we are starting a new event. And we are happy to see you here at our exhibition of contemporary art. In the week ahead you’re going to enjoy the works of our local artists. Instead of a lottery, this time we’re going to reward all our guests. Next Sunday, on the last day of our exhibition everyone can choose a book on art. Keep your ticket, you can exchange it for a book.

Text B

Hi, mum! I’m gonna be late for dinner. We’re going to stay at school till seven pm. There’s a football match here and we need to support our team because it’s the final. We’ve got a good chance of winning it. Don’t worry if I don’t answer my phone. It’ll be noisy, so I may not hear it. I’ll call you as soon as the game’s over. And don’t ask me about homework. I’ll do it later, I promise. Harry said he’d help me if I have any problems but there won’t be any problems. See you later!

Text C

-Excuse me! I’ve left my umbrella in this shopping centre.

-Oh, dear! We’ve got lots of lost things: phones, bags and even a vintage black-and-white TV centre!

-Right! But I want to find out about …

-Amazing! Last week ten gloves were left. All of different colours.

-Yes, I understand, but I need to get my umbrella back. It’s bright and noticeable. You can’t confuse it with anyone else’s.

-Of course. What did you say its length? We’ve found a large light blue umbrella the other day.

-No, it’s not mine. Mine has got red, pink and violet flower patterns on a white background.

-Ok, let’s see. Text D

-Hello! I’m Mark. How can I help you?

-Hi, Mark! I’m Alice. I’d like to join your fitness centre.

-Very good. What activity do you enjoy? Swimming, aerobics, yoga or dancing?

-Well, I don’t like swimming. Aerobics is too exhausting and difficult. I’d prefer yoga. I’ve never participated before but I’ve heard it’s good for the body and for the spirit.

-Yes, that’s right. I can include you in our class for beginners.

-Yes, that’s fine. Do you I have to bring my own yoga mat or do you provide it here?

-Wait a moment, Alice. I’ll introduce you to our instructor. She’ll explain everything.

Presenter: Good afternoon! Today we’ve asked five people to give us a short interview and share their opinions about learning foreign languages. Now we would like to present their opinions to you.

Speaker A

I have to say that I find learning languages really very difficult but nevertheless I want to speak at least two or three foreign languages: French, Spanish and maybe Chinese. It’s necessary in today's world when people travel a lot and communicate across countries. It’s also very good for successful business if you’re able to work with foreign partners and know their language and culture and can establish better contact with them.

Speaker B

In my opinion, it’s so exciting to learn a foreign language. It’s so much fun to use all those techniques to memorize new words and I just love comparing the words and structures of my native language with foreign ones. I know many people find it so hard or even boring and

monotonous but I don’t understand them. I really enjoy learning foreign languages. It’s the best way to spend your free time and I always feel enthusiastic after a language class.

Speaker C

I don’t know why so many people are interested in learning a foreign language. I think it’s the most monotonous task in the world. So about learning new words, making up unrealistic dialogues and reading texts. It’s just a nightmare. It’s the worst way to spend your time, in my opinion. I can actually find more exciting things to do. I’ll only learn a foreign language if I need it for my future job, which I hope won’t ever happen to me.

Speaker D

I believe that it is not very difficult to learn a foreign language. As far as I know, some students are able to communicate reasonably in a new language only a few weeks after they start to learn it. They can explain what they need in some certain standard situations fairly well. They make mistakes of course. Still, I think minor pronunciation or grammar mistakes are not so important as long as you can express your thoughts and be understood by other speakers.

Speaker E

If you ask me, well, I think learning a foreign language is very hard. I can’t say that it is boring as I feel quite happy learning new words and reading texts in a foreign language. I don’t think it takes a long time either. I mean the time investment is definitely worth it. It’s just not very easy to make yourself work on a regular basis. And you have to read a lot and be clever and have a good memory and make notes. It’s really hard.

Interviewer: Well, first of all, I would like to thank you for agreeing to take part in our survey.

Respondent: Oh, that’s fine. I don’t mind. I’m fourteen in case you need my age for your survey. Interviewer: You look even younger than fourteen. And where were you born?

Respondent: In London.

Interviewer: Alright. And have you ever lived in any other places?

Respondent: No, I’ve spent all my life here. I go to visit my grandparents in Oxford sometimes

but that doesn’t count. Interviewer: No, it doesn’t.

Respondent: Come on. Ask your questions! But I like answering questions because I have to

answer them at school.

Interviewer: You must be good at school. What’s your favourite subject?

Respondent: I love literature most of all and I’m good at it. History is not bad, but it is not as interesting as literature.

Interviewer: I see. Well, let’s get the basic things like your daily routine. What’s your usual

breakfast like?

Respondent: Pardon?

Interviewer: I mean what do you usually eat in the morning before school? Respondent: A sandwich.

Interviewer: Just that?

Respondent: Yeah, every morning mum makes a big sandwich for me. It may be with ham,

chees, tuna fish, whatever. But it’s always a sandwich because I like it. And I don’t feel hungry for a long time. And for lunch…

Interviewer: Stop, stop! You really enjoy talking about food. I wouldn’t be surprised if you want to be a cook in the future. I mean to choose cooking as a career.

Respondent: Oh no! No way! I enjoy eating, not cooking. And as for my career, I want to be a

journalist. Like you. Because I like talking to people asking all sorts of questions. Interviewer: You know; journalist is not only about talking.

Respondent: Just kidding. I know. Of course, it’s not only about talking.

Interviewer: Hmm… One more question. What about your hobby? It’s not cooking, I

understand.

Respondent: No, it’s definitely not. It’s painting. Interviewer: Painting?

Respondent: Do you mean with oils and brushes? Interviewer: Exactly! And also with watercolours and pencils. Respondent: Amazing! One more question if you don’t mind.

Dear guests! We are happy to welcome you to our hotel. This year we’ve got a surprise for you which is going to be particularly interesting for families with children. Now, along with splashing in the pool and seeing the aquarium with tropical fish, our young guests can visit the place

where we grow fruit and vegetables for our restaurant. Right behind our building, there’s a

territory with a garden and an enclosure with hens, ducks, rabbits and even a couple of goats.

Text B

Hi, Jane! It’s Amanda. I’m calling to say that we had to change the date of my birthday party. In the invitation, it’s written as the 14th of October, which is Saturday, but the weather forecast says it’ll be raining the whole day. Not very good for a garden party, is it? That’s why we’ve moved it to Sunday which promises to be a warm and sunny day. The time is the same - at 2pm. Call me on Friday evening to confirm that you are coming. See you on Sunday!

Seller: Hello, can I help you?

Man: Yes, I need to buy a present for my nephew. Seller: How old is he? And what’s he interested in?

Man: He is nine. Like most boys, he likes playing with his dog, assembling Lego, drawing or

painting lots of other things.

Seller: How about a book about searching for a lost castle?

Man: Sounds good but I gave him a book for Christmas and he wasn’t very impressed. Any other idea?

Seller: Well, you mentioned Lego or a skateboard!

Man: He has already got both.

Seller: Then I would recommend this big set of paints.

Man: Oh, I think this one would do. I’m sure he’ll like it. Where can I pay?

James: Hi, Kate!

Kate: Oh, sorry, James. What did you say? I didn’t hear you.

James: Of course. Because you were wearing your headphones. What did you listen to? Kate: My Spanish course.

James: Cool. Your new hobby? It’s a shame I can’t speak any foreign languages. My brother is

learning French. He even tries to write poems in French.

Kate: There’s nothing to be ashamed of. Some people enjoy learning languages, others are good at other things. As for you - you’ve got a great talent for roller skating!

James: I won’t argue. I won the first prize in the City Rollers’ competition, by the way. Kate: Congratulations!

Задание 5

Now we are ready to start.

Presenter: Good afternoon. Today we have asked 5 people to give the short interview and

share their opinions about life in big cities. Now we would like to present their opinions to you.

Speaker A

Of course, big cities can’t boast many parks or fresh and clean air, but life in a big city is certainly exciting. You can watch new blockbusters or attend theatre performances or concerts of the best musicians. Big cities have many museums, concert halls and what not. I also enjoy the hustle and bustle of a big city life – people walking fast along the streets, there’s hustle and bustle everywhere, cars moving and beeping, it’s really fun.

Speaker B

I live in a big city, but I wish I could move to the countryside. My parents have good jobs here, but they are also dreaming of going freelance and living in the country. You see, the air is very polluted in my city and the tap water is not drinkable either and it’s hard to find a place to go for a walk, which is certainly bad for health. We need to find a way out as long as we haven’t developed any illnesses yet, I think.

Speaker C

On the one hand, big city life is interesting, but on the other hand, big cities are very noisy. You can hear loud sounds from cars moving along the streets, even at night, and you can easily get irritated because of it. The fast lifestyle many as you live, when you are always in a hurry, also makes you feel annoyed and tired. You get nervous and worry, which is certainly not very good for you. Being in a bad mood all the time because of the noise leads to anxiety and stress.

Speaker D

I do understand that life in a big city has a lot of minuses, like bad ecology or a lot of stress, but to be perfectly frank, I wouldn’t like to live anywhere else. I don’t think that the countryside can offer many employment opportunities. There are few workplaces there and the salaries are

much lower than in big cities. I think that’s why many people prefer to stay in a big city rather than move to the country.

Speaker E

Of course, big cities offer better schools and jobs and more chances to attend concerts and

theatre plays, but I still find life in a big city uninteresting and monotonous. It’s the same all the year round. The colors around don’t change; it’s the same routine every morning and every evening. You go on the same buses, all people in the street look grey, dull and busy. Being busy doesn’t mean living an exciting life. I’d actually prefer to have more fun.

Interviewer: First of all, I would like to thank you for taking part in our survey. We are doing it as a part of our university course. It won’t take you long, I promise.

Respondent: Oh, that’s fine. I’ve got time and I’m happy to help you with your project. Do you need my name and age?

Interviewer: Only your age.

Respondent: OK. I’m sixty.

Interviewer: Sixty? You don’t look it! Respondent: Thank you.

Interviewer: What do you do to keep so fit? Any special gymnastics?

Respondent: No. But I’ve been playing tennis since childhood. And still do it once or twice a week. It helps me to be in shape.

Interviewer: Any special food? What is the basis of your diet?

Respondent: Vegetables. I eat lots of them. There’s no need to explain how good vegetables are for the body and mind. And of course I try to avoid junk foods and meat. I’m from India and we have traditions of cooking vegetables there. My wife is a professional cook, by the way. She cooks very well!

Interviewer: Lucky you! So you were born in India, weren’t you? Right. Did you leave India long ago? Respondent: Yes. I went to university in the United States to be an engineer and, since graduation, have been travelling a lot.

Interviewer: Because of your job?

Respondent: Yes. Companies from different countries still employ me. Good engineers are always needed.

Interviewer: That’s true. It’s one of the most important professions in the world.

Respondent: There are lots of others, equally important, to be fair. Every person considers their

job important. I’m sure you feel the same about your future career.

Interviewer: Sure. Yes, I really do. And getting back to the survey… one more question - what do you do in your free time?

Respondent: I used to play computer games when I was younger. But now I don’t. It’s not very good for my eyes, at least my doctor says so. Now I go fishing whenever I have an opportunity. But I don’t have much time for this hobby yet. I’ll be going fishing much more often when I’m retired. And I’ll probably join the Fishermen’s Club.

Interviewer: Thank you for giving me your time, but I’ve got a few more questions if you don’t mind...

Text A

I’d like to present some really good news. You know that our company has set up a computer club, which is going to be free for anyone who wants to upgrade their computer skills. To make our work effective we hold classes for young people aged 12-20 at weekends. Retired people are very welcome from Monday to Friday in the mornings. After them there will be a group for small kids. Schoolchildren, as I’ve already said come on Saturday and Sunday.

Text B

Hi, Jack! It’s Cathy. I’m just calling to say sorry. I didn’t come to your birthday party yesterday because I had a very bad day. It all started in the morning. My dog Buddy got very sick. We took him to the hospital and he was operated then. I waited there till I could take him home. Now everything is fine, he’s at home, lying on my leg while I’m trying to concentrate on my Maths homework. Anyway, I hope you had a great day. Sorry again and happy birthday for yesterday.

Text C

-Ms. Smith, did you want to see me?

-Yes, Oliver. Thanks for coming.

-I just want to make sure you enjoy studying at our language school and that everything is fine.

You don’t have any relatives in this country as far as I know.

-No, I don’t. Are you happy with the place where you’re staying?

-Yes. At first I wanted to stay with a host family but there was a vacant room in the hostel. My friend and I decided to have a look and we stayed there.

-Fine. Do you cook for yourself in the shared kitchen or do you eat out?

-We cook for ourselves. I can do it quite well. My mum told me.

-Really?

Text D

-Hi, Jane! I didn’t expect to see you here, at the photo exhibition. I didn’t know you’re

interested in photography.

-No, Frank, I’m not.

-But the exhibition is about the history of our town and I have to do a project on it.

-I see. You collect the information for the project.

-Exactly.

-Right. Any plans for tonight?

-I don’t know yet. It’s cold and rainy. Nasty weather.

-My sister said it’s a sort of weather for knitting and drawing.

-I hate both. What I like is making pies, cakes and biscuits.

-Oh, cooking! It sounds more original than drawing and much tastier.

Задание 5

Now we are ready to start.

Presenter: Good afternoon! Today we have asked 5 people to give us a short interview and share their opinions about reading. Now we would like to present their opinions to you.

Speaker A

I like reading, especially historical novels. That's why I know more than most of my classmates. Our teacher often asks me to give presentations to the whole class. I know it takes a long time to read a novel but it’s definitely worth it. It helps me to broaden my outlook and it’s easier for me to do my homework or perform better if we have a test at school. I think I get more information from novels than they give us in student books.

Speaker B

I wish I could read more as I know it can help me with my school education but I just can’t make myself do it. Many people find it interesting to read but not me. When I close a book, I forget all about it. So, it is not interesting for me to come back to it. I don’t enjoy the process of reading, that’s a fact. I wonder what I can do about it. My friends love reading and don’t understand me. So, I’ll probably have to do something about it.

Speaker C

Reading is important but it’s hard to find a gap in my schedule to read a book for pleasure. I’m always too busy having classes at school, going to the swimming pool, playing football with my friends, doing homework and so on. I have piles of books which I want to read but I don’t have the time to do it because you need at least an hour in the evening for a good book. It’s so hard to squeeze that much time in my packed schedule.

Speaker D

Reading is not simply my hobby. It’s my passion. I don’t know what can be more exciting than buying a new book or getting one in a library and enjoying the events that take place there. It’s simply breathtaking. I know books aren’t cheap but they are worth the money because nothing can give you more fun and pleasure than a good book. You can read about exciting adventures and mysterious events set in unforgettable places.

Speaker E

I don’t know why so many people love reading. To begin with, books are rather expensive to buy and libraries don’t always have the books you may want to read. What they have is outdated books, which nobody wants to read anymore. Some people may find it interesting to read, but in my opinion it’s such a waste of time. Most books don’t have anything educational or practical. You forget one as soon as you finish it.

Interviewer: First of all, I would like to thank you for agreeing to take part in our survey.

-Oh, it’s ok. It’s the third survey I’m taking part in this month.

-Really? Yes, I was interviewed by your colleagues from TV. They asked me about travelling and my favourite cities.

-And what’s your favourite city?

-Rome. It’s my native city. I was born there but then my parents left Rome for New York. The

second interview was about music and music styles like classical rock, pop, you know?

-Yes, sure. And for my survey I have to ask about your age, if you don’t mind, of course.

-No, I don’t. I’m thirty, I turned thirty last month and haven’t got used to this number yet.

-I see. As you start to talk about music, what’s your favourite style?

-It’s not easy to choose, I like everything, but when I have a choice, I always choose classical jazz.

-Jazz? It’s my favourite, too. Is your job related to music? Are you a musician, a costume designer, a music band manager?

-You’ve hit it! A manager! But my job has nothing to do with music, unfortunately. I’m a

manager and I work in a large business centre, which is not very exciting.

-It’s an important job and it makes it stressful. You definitely need some relaxation after a working day. Do you do aerobics, go jogging or anything else?

-I used to do aerobics when I was at school. Now I prefer swimming to anything. There’s a

pool close to the office and it’s very convenient.

-Right. It’s very good for the body, as far as I know. Do you do anything else to keep fit? Some sort of a diet?

-No, I don’t stick to any diet though I try to avoid unhealthy food like chips, crisps and hamburgers.

-Right.

-I like rice. I cook it with vegetables, fish and meat. In fact, rice is the basis of my daily menu. And even for dessert I often have rice pudding.

-Well, to stay on this theme, the desserts are delicious food, I would like to ask you one more question.
