  1. Presentation of the grammar material.

T: Do you remember when do we use the present perfect tense?

How do we form the Present Perfect Tense?

1. Read the text and find the examples of the Present Perfect Tense.

I have been here for 2 years.

My name’s Kim and I live in San Francisco. I’ve lived here for two years now. My family came over here from Wales because the weather is so much warmer. When I first came here, I felt lonely. I have had a lot of spare time since we are in San Francisco. However, I’ve made a lot of friends and my life has improved. I have started learning how to rollerblade. It’s great. I’ve learned many different words, too. Americans say such funny things sometimes. The one sad thing is that I haven’t seen my relatives in Wales for a long time. I can’t imagine going back, though.

2. Find the sentences with time expressions for and since in the text.

I’ve lived here for two years now.

I have had a lot of spare time since we are in San Francisco.

I haven’t seen my relatives in Wales for a long time.

3. Rule.

Look at the underlined time expressions in the sentences above and complete the rule for for and since.

We use _______ for a period of time, e.g. six weeks. (for)

We use _______ for a point in time, e.g. 1998. (since)

since – с какого-то времени

for – в течение какого-то времени

s ince 2007 2012

for five years

  1. Consolidation of the grammar material.

1. Listen to the end of the sentence and then decide if you need ‘for’ or ‘since’ to fill in the gaps correctly.

3 month (for 3 month), Christmas (since Christmas), 2 years (2 years), 2001 (since 2001), a long time (for a long time), 5 o’clock (since 5 o’clock), 10 minutes (for 10 minutes).

I have been here for a long time.

I have been here since 1999.

2. Drag the answers into the correct gaps for and since. Choose the proper item to each blank.

April

Easter

2001

last week

Sarah has been playing hockey for

a long time
