The wonders of Russia
Lake Baikal
Lake Baikal is a rift lake and the deepest lake in the world. It is situated in southern Siberia. Lake Baikal is the world's largest freshwater lake by volume, containing 23,615.39 km3 (5,670 cu mi) of water or 22–23% of the world's fresh surface water, more than all of the North American Great Lakes combined. It is also the world's oldest lake at 25–30 million years, and among the clearest. It is estimated that the lake contains around 19% of the unfrozen fresh water on the planet.
The Valley of Geysers
- The Valley of Geysers really has the right to be called “the pearl of Kamchatka”. The valley is unique in its beauty, majesty and number of fountaining geysers gathered on the same territory. There aren’t any places in the world like the Valley of Geysers.
Mount Elbrus
- Mount Elbrus is the highest mountain in Russia and Europe. It is a dormant stratovolcano rising 5,642 m above sea level, and is the highest volcano in Eurasia, as well as the tenth-most prominent peak in the world. It is situated in the southern Russian republic of Kabardino-Balkaria in the western extension of Ciscaucasia, and is the highest peak of the Caucasus Mountains.
Manpupuner
- The Northern Urals are home to an incredible geological monument: seven rock pillars 30-42 meters high. The bizarrely shaped stone idols are all that remain of an ancient mountain range that was eroded over millions of years by biting winds, precipitation, and frost. The pillars survived thanks to their robust quartz backbone. One of the most inaccessible places in Russia, Manpupuner is situated in the Pechoro-Ilychsky nature reserve of the Komi Republic, on the border with Perm Territory and Sverdlovsk Region, tens of kilometers from the nearest settlement.
Peterhof
- Peterhof is one of the most beautiful suburbs of Saint-Petersburg located on the coast of the Gulf of Finland. The city of Peterhof began with an ensemble of palaces and parks which Emperor Peter I decided to build to overshadow the famous French Versailles.
Saint Basil's Cathedral
- The Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed, commonly known as Saint Basil's Cathedral, is an Orthodox church in Red Square of Moscow, and is one of the most popular cultural symbols of Russia. It was built from 1555 to 1561 on orders from Ivan the Terrible and commemorates the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan. It was the city's tallest building until the completion of the Ivan the Great Bell Tower in 1600.
The Motherland Calls
- Mother Motherland or the Motherland Calls or the Mamayev monument in Russia is a statue of a woman raising her sword to the sky commemorating the Battle of Stalingrad. The statue also serves as a symbol of the Soviet victory during World War II, in which the Red Army defeated the German troops. The statue’s name more literally translates to ‘the Motherland that gave birth to me is calling,’ referring to the allegorical Mother Russia.
