Good afternoon. Let me introduce myself. My name is Leonov Dmitriy. I’m a student of the Astrakhan college of computer engineering. The topic of my presentation is the Astrakhan St. John the Baptist’s monastery.

Astrakhan St. John the Baptist’s monastery is more than three hundred years old. Its history is full of events significant for the history of Astrakhan and even the history of Russia.

The elderly monk Alexander and the community ask Metropolitan Savaty for his permission to build a stone church dedicated to St. John the Holy Prophet and God’s Baptist. The construction of the church begins. The monastery acquires the same name.

The erection of the church completed in 1697.

In 1920 the monastery the greater part of the monastery premises was nationalized by Local Authorities.

In the early 30s the Church was closed and used as a storage.

In 1989 the Church was given back to Orthodox Church.

From 1992 the modern history of the monastery began.

On the 22^nd of February 1995 by the decree of Most Holy Patriarch Aleksey II John the Forerunner’s Monastery was restored in its rank.

This is Father Superior Peter. Meeting us at the Holy Gates to the monastery crowned by a small bulbous cupola. I think you will agree that it gives the Gates solemn and slightly fabulous image.

The Hegumen’s house was erected in 1895. On its first floor there were classes of the monastery parish school. Now there is a library, a classroom of Sunday school and a vestry there.

The south - western corner of the building is surmounted with a small turret and the figure of an Angel trumpeting.

He is considered a symbol of the cloister.

In the 19^th century similar Angels decorated the four corners of the monastery walls.

Nowadays about 300 boys and girls attend classes at the Sunday school. The educational mission is about 300 years ago.

In fact the monastery is much then just a school. There is choral school - studio and a theatrical studio. The boy chorus “Resurrection” and the girl one “The Sparklets” won festivals not once. So did the “Heather” dance ensemble.

Have a look: this is the new brethren house. It was built in 2001. On the first floor there are cells for monks and novices.

Let us enter the cathedral.

The cathedral was painted all over again with sacred images at the end of the XXth century.

The new four - tired iconostasis is a bog oak imitation. It has icons of academic painting.

The first reference to the monastery.

Astrakhan St. John the Baptist’s monastery is more than three hundred years old. Its history is full of events significant for the history of Astrakhan and even the history of Russia.

Hegumen’s House

The Hegumen’s house was erected in 1985. On its first floor there were classes of the monastery parish school. Now there is a library, a classroom for a choir, classrooms of our Sunday school and a vestry there.

The south-western corner of the building is surmounted with a small turret and figure of an Angel trumpeting. In the 19 th century similar Angels decorated the four corners of the monastery walls.

Brethren House

Have a look: this is the new brethren house. It was built in 2001. On the first floor there are calls for monks and novices.
