The Murder of The Dentist's Patient.
Dr. Mark Robbins, a London-born New York dentist, was preparing to take a wax impression of the right lower teeth of his patient, Ann Clane. Silently the door behind him opened. A gloved hand holding a gun appeared. Two shots sounded. Miss Clane slumped over in the chair, badly wounded. An ambulance took her to the nearest hospital.
An hour later Inspector Collins was talking to his friend Bob Kim about the case.He said that the police had a suspect. A few minutes before the shooting, the elevator boy took a nervous man to the fifteenth floor. That's the floor Dr Robbins' office was on. The elevator boy's description of the man fitted a known criminal, John Burton."We picked him up at his house," said Collins "I'd like you, Bob, to be present at the interrogation."
Burton was ushered into the inspector's office. He looked at the inspector angrily and demanded to know why he had been called in.
"Have you ever heard of Dr. Robbins?" Collins asked him.
Burton denied.
"Ann Clane was shot in the head less than two hours ago as she sat in a chair in Dr. Robbins' office." Collins continued.
But Burton said that he had been sleeping all that afternoon.
"An elevator boy says he took a man answering your description to the floor a moment before the shots were heard," said the inspector.
"It wasn't me. I look like a lot of guys. I have never been near the dentist's office. I bet he has never seen me, so what can you prove?" Burton asked. But Bob Kim interrupted him. You've told us enough to send you back to prison for a long time," he said.
