If you want to use modal verbs to talk about intention, obligation or ability in the past, we simply change words:
I can drive a car.
I could drive a car five years ago.
He said he would walk the
dog in the evening
He will walk the dog in the evening
I had to buy a new Iphone year ago
I have to buy a new Iphone

1. Liam isn’t at class now. He must have stayed home.
(I am sure it’s true).
2. Peter didn’t take his coat. It might have been warm outside.
(I am not sure, but it’s possible).
3. Ashley was on the islands when the diamonds were stolen. She cant have done it!
(I am sure it is not true)
If we want to give our opinion about the past or
if we regret about something in the past we use
Should have shouldn’t have
What might have happened?
