Miss Evans.( After F. M. Mainwaring.)

On a beautiful afternoon, in a year now long gone, a big ship set out on its first voyage from England to America. It was a new ship called the “Titanic”.

For two days the “Titanic” went on its way over the sea. Then it entered an ice -field and was hit by an iceberg.

Everyone was told to come out of their rooms. Men were putting the lifeboats over the sides of the ship, down into the water. Then all the helped the women and children to get into the lifeboats.

There was not very much time left. The iceberg was on one side of the ship. It was like a high, white wall.

A woman came to the side of the ship. Her two children were in one of the lifeboats, and she was very much afraid.

“My children are in the lifeboat. I must go with them!” the woman called to the people in the lifeboat.

“There’s no more room,” someone called out. “If we take one more, the lifeboat will sink”.

There was a young woman in the lifeboat called Miss Evans. When she heard the woman calling, she stood up in the lifeboat and touched one of the men on the arm.

“Let me go back on to the ship,” she said. “Let that woman take my place. I have no children.”

“The ship is sinking,” said the man. “You know that?”

“Yes,” said Miss Evans, “I know that”.

There was no time to talk. People helped Miss Evans to get back on the ship. Very soon after that there was a great noise, and the “Titanic” went down under the water.

III. READ THE TEXTS ABOUT THE TRAVELLING EXPERIENCES OF A GIRL AND A YOUNG MAN..

What went wrong in each case? Choose the right letter .

  1. As soon as I arrived, I left my suitcase in the hotel (I didn’t even unpack them) and rushed to the beach. I’d been waiting for that moment for so long! At that time of year the weather in my country is rather unpleasant-we have cold grey rains and biting winds. And there, at the seaside, the weather was fantastic- the ea was warm, the sky was clear, and I was simply enjoying the golden sand and the bright sun! I enjoyed it all till the sun disappeared below the horizon. And then… then I realized that my skin was burning and I looked like a tomato, and, not only that, but I had a temperature… I bought some lotions to cool my skin down, but it didn’t help much. It was still painful, and I had to avoid the sunshine till the end of my holiday.

  1. The best holiday for me is skiing holiday. I’ve been in this sport for several years and fresh glittering snow and icy air is better to me than any famous sea resort. Usually I go skiing right near the place where I live, but once I decided to go to a real mountain resort. I packed my skis and clothes for skiing, boarded the plane and was looking forward to seeing the mountains. Unfortunately, I didn’t see much of them. I saw them only through the window of my hotel room, where I had to spend most of my holiday time. My skis and warm winter clothes had been lost in the airport. They just put them in the wrong plane and they flew in the opposite direction. My luggage finally arrived. It wasn’t damaged, but my holiday was over by that time. And both of us, me and my luggage, had a safe flight home.

WRITING.

Письмо.

5, Lermontov Street

July, 24.

Dear Ann,

Greeting from the sunny seaside! I am having a nice time here. The sea is beautiful, the water is warm, the weather is fine. But I don’t want to travel by train any more. The trip was tiring. Do you like to travel by train? I know that you are going to visit Britain. What part of Britain do you want to see? Where are you going to stay? Are you going to study English there? I would like to be with you, but my parents have other plans. They want me to improve my health in the sanatorium. Have you ever been to the sanatorium?

Write back,

Oleg.
