Teacher: Good day, dear boys, girls and our guests! We are glad to see you at our party. Our party is devoted to St. Valentine’s Day. Every country has its own holidays, traditions and customs. It’s very important to know them for better understanding the history and the life of other people. These angels will tell us about the traditions in three countries; USA and England.

Angel 1: To America St. Valentine’s Day came in the 11th century. At the same time appeared a tradition to give their beloved marzipans. With the time they began to make sweets in the shape of hearts.

Angel 2: In ancient times Englishmen gave special spoons to the people they loved. They decorated them with hearts. Nowadays Englishmen give presents even to their pets.

Teacher: There are many different legends about celebrations this holiday, but no one really knows the actual origin of Saint Valentine’s Day. I think it has its roots in several different legends that have found their way through ages. One of them.

Angel 1: When the Roman Emperor Claudius II needed soldiers, he made a law against marriage. He decided that single young men made better soldiers and marriage would make men want to stay at home. Valentine saw the love of young couples, so he married them secretly against the law. Valentine was discovered and condemned to death.

Angel 2: Even in prison Valentine showed his love for everyone. His jailer had a young daughter who was blind. Valentine performed a miracle. He cured the jailer’s daughter of her blindness. Just before his death on February, 14, he sent her a farewell message signed “From your Valentine”. And this day named the St. Valentine Day.

Angel 3: Another legend says that Saint Valentine was a good friend of children. He was a Christian. He would not worship the Roman gods. That’s why he was put into prison. While he was there the children that he had befriend missed him and brought him loving notes. No one knows for sure whether any of them are true.

Teacher: Children, it is time to speak, to dance, to sing about love. Because love is the most beautiful feeling mankind has ever known. It fills our hearts and thoughts and deeds. It’s a strong feeling. (звучит песня “Love story”)

Pupil 1 : Years passed Valentine became a Saint Valentine’s and now is a day for sweet hearts. You can show your love to a person by sending presents, flowers or “valentines”. “Valentines” are greeting cards, very often a funny one with a little poem or some kind words on it. Very often they write on the valentine “From guess who” and the person who receive it must guess the name of a sender. For example:

Pupil 2: Love! Happiness! Beauty! There are not so many days in a years when we pronounce these pleasant words. Today we have an excellent chance to plunge into atmosphere of love. Happy St. Valentine’s Day!

The roses are red, violets are blue

The honey is sweet and so are you.

Sure as the grapes on the wine

So sure you are my Valentine.

Teacher: Love is like poetry. I invite our pupils. Let’s listen to the poems by English poets R. Burns, Percy Bysshe Shelley and W. Scott.

Pupils 1: Burns wrote the poem “My Handsome Nell” when he was 14 years old.

Once I loved a bonny lass,

And oh, I love her still,

She dresses, eye so clean and neat.

Both decent and genteel

But there is something in her gait

Makes any dress look weel

Pupil 2: Now comes the poem “Love’s Philosophy” by Percy Bysshe Shelley.

See the mountains kiss the heaven,

And the waves clasp one another.

No sister flower would be forgiven

If it disdained its brother;

And the sunlight clasps the earth,

And the moonbeams kiss the sea

What are all these kisses worth

If thou kiss not me?

Pupil 3: “Love and the Rose” by W. Scott.

The rose is fairest when ’tis budding new

And hope is brightest when dawns from fears.

The rose is sweetest washed with morning dew

And love is loveliest when embalmed in tears!

Teacher: And now the pupils are going to perform a small play “On the Farm”. The characters are: F – a farm girl, G – a gentleman.

G. Where are you going, my pretty maid?

F. I’m going a milking, sir

G. May I go with you, my pretty maid?

F. You are kindly welcome, sir.

G. What is your father, my pretty maid?

F. My father is a farmer, sir.

G. Say, will you marry me, my pretty maid?

F. Yes, if you please.

G. What is your fortune, my pretty maid?

F. My face is my fortune, sir.

G. Then I won’t marry you, my pretty maid.

F. Nobody asked you, sir.
