CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS Maslenitsa Thanksgiving day Guy Fawkes’ Day
On the 5th of November in almost every town and village in England one can see fire burning, fireworks, cracking and lighting up the sky, small groups of children pulling round in a home made cart, a figure that looks something like a man but consists of an old suit of clothes, stuffed with straw. The children sing and they ask passers-by for "a penny for the Guy"
It refers to very old Slavonic festivals It celebrates the end of winter and the beginig of spring. Usually people cook blini (thin pakcakes) which are the symbol of the sun. In the end of the week they burn the strawman as the symbol of winter end.
It is a public holiday. It is a day off for the general population, and schools and most businesses are closed. Thanksgiving Day is a day for people in the US to give thanks for what they have. Families and friends get together for a meal, which traditionally includes a roast turkey, stuffing, potatoes, vegetables, cranberry sauce, gravy, and pumpkin pie.
In some cities and towns, there are parades during the Thanksgiving weekend.
