What is a Limerick ?

Limerick (verse), a humorous verse form, the subject of which is often nonsensical but the structure of which is strictly prescribed.

Lines one, two , and five contain three metrical feet, and rhyme; lines three and four contain two metrical feet, and rhyme.

Originally, limericks were delivered orally and served as commentaries on manners and behavior.

The term limerick (from a refrain in a popular song of the day "will you come up to Limerick ") was first applied in the late 1890s to Lear's verse.

Castle of King John

The Castle of King John in Limerick, Ireland, was constructed around 1200 on the Shannon River.

Edward Lear ( 1812 -1888 ) , English painter and humorist, born in London. Considered among the masters of the limerick , to which he gave the modern formula, he wrote A Book of Nonsense (1846), Nonsense Songs (1871), and Laughable Lyrics (1877). ( « learicks » )

• В лимерике пять строчек, причем первая рифмуется со второй и пятой, а третья с четвертой.

Первая строчка рассказывает о том, кто и откуда :

There was a young man of Peru …

• вторая - что сделал, или что с ним произошло

Who wanted to ride a kangaroo …

• и далее - чем все закончилось.

( В каноническом лимерике конец последней строчки повторяет конец первой . )

But when he came to the zoo,

There was no kangaroo,

And that saved the young man of Peru.
