It was discovered by the Dutch in 1606, but the continent was not settled till Captain Cook discovered the east coast in 1770. It was first used as colony for convicts.

The Aborigines are the Australian natives that had been living there for thousands of years before the first Europeans came to Australia in the 1600s.

The flag of Australia: the red, white and blue Union Jack in the upper left quarter, indicating Australia’s membership in the Commonwealth, the white five-star Southern Cross in the right half; and the white seven-pointed federal star blow the Union Jack. Australia's coat of arms – the official emblem of the Australian Government – was granted by George V in 1912. The arms consist of a shield containing the badges of the six states. The supporters are native Australian fauna – a kangaroo and an emu. A yellow-flowered native plant, wattle, also appears in the design.

National holiday: Australia Day, January (celebrates the first settlement of Australia)

Until 1901 Australia was a British colony. Now Australia is an independent federal state within the Commonwealth headed by the British Queen. The Queen is represented by Governor General. The Head of Government is Prime Minister.

Slide 12 Great Barrier Reef It’s the world’s largest coral reef (over 2000 km). It stretches along the east coast of Queensland. It’s made up of over 2900 individual reefs very close to each other.

Read and translate the text.

Australia is a continent, a country and an island all at the same time. Australia is the sixth largest nation after Russia, Canada, China, the United States of America and Brazil. It is located in the southern hemisphere.

Australia is situated south of Asia, between the Pacific and the Indian Oceans.

The Australia federation consists of six states and two territories. The largest State, Western Australia is about the same size as Western Europe.

Australia is a very urban country. About 70 per cent of the population live in 10 largest cities.

“Canberra is the capital of Australia. It is not biggest city but very beautiful”. Canberra is the home of Australia’s government and embassies from around the world.

Australia love their wildlife. The Australian government pays much to the preservation of the environment. They have already planted 550 million trees.

Now Australia is an independent, democratic nation with a tradition of religious tolerance and free speech.

In 1901 the Australian colonies federated to become the Commonwealth of Australia. In 1931 Australia gained independence from Great Britain.

Australia is also a source of foreign investments for its trading partners and Australia –based companies have important transnational operations.
