Англо-говорящие страны: географическое положение, население, языки

На уроке идет повторение лексического материала по теме “English-speaking countries”. Учащиеся знакомятся с социокультурным портретом англоговорящих стран, родной страны, а также с культурным наследием англоговорящих стран и России.

Аннотация к уроку:

   УМК “Enjoy English”, М.З. Биболетова, Н.Н. Трубанева.

На данном уроке школьники учатся употреблять в речи определенный артикль с названиями стран, государств, городов, языков и национальностей. В течение урока учащиеся развивают самоконтроль, самооценку, работают в различных режимах: в индивидуальном, групповом.  На данном уроке учащиеся пользуются такими приемами мыслительной деятельности, как группировка, сравнение, анализ, синтез. Развивают навыки восприятия речи на слух с извлечением нужной информации. Развивают навыки говорения с помощью  таких видов работы, как, диалог- обмен репликами, выражение своих мыслей, чувств. Развивают коммуникативную компетенцию. Использование ИКТ активизирует  мыслительную деятельность на уроке, повышает мотивацию учащихся.  

Тип урока: Урок обобщения и систематизации изученных знаний.

Цели урока:

Образовательные:

 - знакомство с особенностями жизни англоязычной страны;

 -  совершенствование лексических навыков

 - тренировка навыков чтения;

Развивающие:

     - развитие учебно-интеллектуальных навыков и умений ;

     - развитие коммуникативных умений;

     - развитие способности к сравнению, сопоставлению, формулированию выводов;

Воспитательные:

-  поддержание  у учащихся интереса к изучению  иностранного языка как средства общения

Задачи  урока:

1. Активизировать лексический материал

2. Тренировать в употреблении лексического материала

3. Обучать чтению с выборочным извлечением информации

4.  Формировать умение собирать, систематизировать и интерпретировать культуроведческую информацию по теме .

- раздаточный материал;

- наглядный материал (эмблемы и флаги англо-говорящих стран)

There are many countries and nations on the planet. They all have different cultures, languages, and environments. The aim of our lesson today is to learn more about English speaking countries, their historical, geographical and cultural characteristics. And also we will find out what English – speaking people think about their countries.

Подготовка к основному этапу урока:

A) Проведение фонетической зарядки.

Look at the map, please. You can see different continents and countries there. The  words on the blackboard will help us to remember the names of the countries and the nationalities of people living in them.

Let’s dream a little. Some of our pupils and our guests have a chance to visit English speaking countries as tourists, of course. We’ll visit some countries and cities by plane. You are on a board now.

We’ll have transits in some English Speaking countries: New York, USA – London, Great Britain - Toronto, Canada – Sydney – Australia and come back to Russia. (Выступления учащихся сопровождаются с презентацией)

The United States of America

The U.S.A. is one of the richest and one of the largest countries in the world. It is situated in the central part of the North American Continent. There are 50 states in the United States of America. The population of the United States is nearly 250 million people. The American flag is the main symbol of the United States. It is often called “The Stars and Stripes”. Its colors are red, white and blue.  Stars are for each of the 50 states, stripes for each of the original thirteen American colonies. One of the most famous symbols of the United States is the Statue of Liberty. It was given to America by France in 1884 as a symbol of friendship. The Statue is in New York harbor on Liberty Island. 

The main wonder of the USA is the Grand Canyon, one of America’s main tourist attractions. It covers thousands of acres. The Colorado River cut down through hard rock and formed the Grand Canyon over millions of years. Today the canyon is one mile deep and 363 km long.

The capital of the USA is Washington D. C.

It is not in any of the 50 states but has its own private land, the District of Columbia. It was founded in 1791 and was named in honor of the first President of the United States, George Washington. Washington D.C. is the political, cultural and scientific centre of America. The heart of Washington D.C. is the national Capitol Building. There also memorials to some of the American presidents: the Washington Monument, the Jefferson Memorial, and the Lincoln Memorial.

Great Britain - London (Heathrow Airport)

S2: The land of Albion greets us. People in England like to talk about the weather. It changes very often. There are often clouds in the sky and it often rains. Rain falls in spring, rain falls in summer, and rain falls in autumn and even in winter. Do you know any facts about Britain? Let’s listen to some more information about this country.

GREAT BRITAIN The official name for the country is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. In every day use the word “Britain” is quite possible. The United Kingdom is situated on the British Isles in the Northwest of Europe. The English Channel separates it from the continent.

The most popular sport in Britain is football. Great Britain is a monarchy, but the Queen is not absolute. Her powers are limited by Parliament. There are four countries in the United Kingdom: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

ENGLAND

England is the largest country and situated in the south-east of Great Britain. The population is 49 million people. The emblem of England is rose. The national flag of England represents a red cross on a white field. It’s Saint George’s Cross of England.

The capital of Great Britain is London. It is situated on the famous river Thames. If you go to London, you can visit Buckingham Palace. It is the London home of the British Queen. You can also visit Trafalgar Square, where people from all parts of London celebrate New Year; Piccadilly Circus, the meeting point of six streets; Westminster Abbey, a royal church, where you can see tombs of many British Kings and queens and other famous people; St. Paul's Cathedral, the greatest work of the architect Sir Christopher Wren and the Tower of London.

SCOTLAND

Scotland is the second part of the UK. The population of Scotland is 5 million people. The national emblem of Scotland is a thistle. And the national flag is a blue field with white diagonal crossed stripes. It's Saint Andrew's Cross.

The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh.

There are a lot of beautiful lakes in Scotland. But the most famous of them are Loch Lomond and Loch Ness. The lake “Loch Ness” is famous all over the world because of a water monster Nessie that lives there. The greatest mountain in Scotland is Ben Nevis. The Scot's national instrument is the bagpipe. The Scottish piper wears a skirt, called a kilt.

WALES

Wales is the smallest country in the United Kingdom. The population of Wales is 3 million people. The national flag is white and green with red dragon on it. The capital of Wales is Cardiff. One of the biggest mountains is Snowdon. Wales is a country of music and songs. Every year there is a competition to name the best Welsh poets, writers and musicians. Wales is also the country of castles. Today Queen Elizabeth's son, Charles is the Prince of Wales.


NORTHERN IRELAND

Northern Ireland is the fourth country in the UK. The population of Northern Ireland is 2 million people. The national symbol is a green shamrock and a red hand. The national flag of NI represents a diagonal red cross on a white field. It's Saint Patrick's Cross.

The capital of the Northern Ireland is Belfast. Northern Ireland is a land of lakes and rivers. People who live in Ireland are the Irish.

If you go to the country, you will see the Giant Causeway. The giant causeway has 40 000 columns. The legend says that the giant Finn McCool loved a lady giant from an island near Scotland. He began to build this causeway to bring her to Ireland.


Canada

The name Canada is believed to come from the Indian word Kanata meaning “village” or “community”. Now Canada is the world’s second largest country after Russia. The capital of the country is Ottawa. The country’s most important symbol is the maple leaf. One can see it on the Canadian flag.


Canada has a population of over 30 million, about 18 per cent of which live in the South. Canada’s largest metropolitan areas are Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Ottawa. French and English are official languages.


Canada has 10 provinces and 3 territories, each with its own capital city. Canada is constitutional monarchy. Elizabeth II, Queen of England, is also Canada’s Queen. She is the head of the state and is represented in Canada by the governor-general.

Australia


Australia is called the land down under because it is below the equator. It is one of the seven continents of the world. It is also a country.

Australia is made up of six states and two territories. It is about the size of the United States (not including Alaska.) 18.3 million people live there, about as many people as in New York. Canberra is the capital of Australia.

Sydney is Australia's largest city. The Sydney Opera House is one of the most unique buildings in the world.

The first people to live in Australia were aborigines. The most famous animals in Australia are marsupials. The most interesting animals are kangaroo and koala.

Australia's national sport is Cricket.

The flag of   Australia is the only one to fly over a whole continent. The small  Union Jack represents the historical link with Britain, the large seven- pointed star represents the six states and the Territories.


- Travelling by plane is very fast and convenient. And we needn’t so much time come back home. They say: “East or West – Home is Best”.

- But it is important and interesting to know what the English – speaking people think about their countries. You have read the stories about them. I give you 1 minute to remember them, then we will do some exercises.

- We have read the information about English – speaking countries. Now we know the general opinion of the people about Great Britain, USA, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.

- The task for you is exercise 34, page 42.

Match the names of the countries and the word combinations to describe them.
