Конспект урока "Глаголы, не употребляемые в The Present Continuous"

Teacher: Today we have to learn some verbs which are not used in the Present Continuous. We have to use the Present Simple Tense instead. Сегодня мы узнаем некоторые глаголы, которые не употребляются в настоящем длительном времени. Вместо него мы должны использовать настоящее простое время.

First of all let`s revise how we build the tenses. Для начала, повторим, как мы образуем данные времена.

To build the Present Simple Tense we add –s, (–es) if the subject is ‘he, she, it’. In other cases we have a no ending. To build questions and negative sentences we need the auxiliary verb do/does and the main verb with no ending. To build the Present Continuous tense we use the auxiliary verb ‘am, is, are’ and add –ing to the main verb. Look: I go to Britain every summer. And: I am going to Britain now.

But we have to remember that some groups of verbs in the English language are not used in the Present Continuous tense. We use the Present Simple Tense instead. Но мы должны помнить, что в английском языке существуют группы глаголов, которые не употребляются в длительном времени. Мы используем простое время вместо него.

They are: verbs denoting sense (Глаголы, обозначающие чувства, ощущения):

For example: we don`t say I am seeing you. We say: I see you. Я тебя вижу. In such cases we often use a modal verb ‘can’. В таких случаях мы часто употребляем модальный глагол ‘can’: I can see you.

Or we don`t say: are you hearing that? Ты это слышишь? The Present Continuous form isn`t correct. We say: Do you hear that? We have to use the Present Simple Tense: do hear.

But remember, that the verb to see in the meaning of visiting somebody can be used in the continuous form. Но запомните, что глагол ‘see’ в значении навещать, посещать, может использоваться в форме длительного времени.

Compare: Stop waving. I see you. Перестань махать. Я тебя вижу (значение чувственного восприятия).

And: I`m seeing my doctor tomorrow morning. Я иду к врачу завтра утром (значение посещать).

The next group is the verbs denoting mental and emotional states. Следующая группа глаголов – это глаголы, обозначающие умственное и эмоциональное состояния.

They are:

For example: we don`t say: I am understanding you. It`s incorrect to use the Present Continuous. We say: I understand you. Я тебя понимаю - The Present Simple Tense.

But be attentive! The verb ‘to think’ in the meaning ‘to have an opinion’ doesn`t have the Continuous form. But in the meaning ‘to use the brain’ it can be used in the Present Continuous Tense. Будьте внимательны! Глагол «to think» в значении «иметь мнение» не имеет длительной формы. А вот в значении «использовать мозг, мыслить» - он может употребляться в настоящем длительном времени.

Look and compare:

I think Moscow is a beautiful city. Я думаю (считаю), что Москва красивый город. The Present Simple.

And: I`m thinking over your offer. Я обдумываю (мыслительный процесс) твое предложение - the Present Continuous.

And finally, the last group of verbs to discuss today: verbs of possession and attitude. И в заключение – последняя группа глаголов для обсуждения на сегодня: глаголы обозначающие принадлежность и отношение:

Look: We don`t say: He is having a car. It`s incorrect! We say: He has a car. У него есть машина. The Present Simple Tense.

But be attentive! When the verb ‘to have’ is used as a part of set expressions to have dinner/lunch/supper, to have fun and others, it can be used in the Present Continuous Tense!

Look and compare:

I have no time. The Present Simple. У меня нет времени (значение: иметь – не иметь).

And: I`m having Dinner now. I`ll call you back. The Present Continuous – Я сейчас обедаю. Я перезвоню. To have dinner – обедать.

And look at the last example:

He is a good child. Он хороший ребенок.

And: he is being naughty these days. I don`t know why. И: последние дни он непослушный. Я не знаю, что случилось.

Remember that if we speak about an unusual behavior at present time we can use the verb ‘to be’ in the Present Continuous. Запомните, если мы говорим о необычном поведении в настоящее время (он обычно хороший, а в последние дни непослушный), тогда мы можем использовать глагол ‘to be’ в настоящем длительном времени.

Teacher: Now please, choose the correct tense of the verb. А сейчас, выберите, пожалуйста, правильное время глаголов.

Sentence number one: I think/am thinking this art gallery is fantastic. Choose the correct tense-form. Here the verb ‘to think’ is used to express opinion. Здесь глагол ‘думать’ употреблен для выражения мнения. В данном значении у него нет формы длительного времени. I think this art gallery is fantastic. Я думаю, что эта художественная галерея великолепна.

The next sentence: She doesn`t have/ isn`t having a ticket to the theatre. Choose the correct form of the verb ‘to have’. Here the verb ‘to have’ is used to express possession. Здесь глагол «иметь» употреблен для выражения обладания, значит, у него нет формы длительного времени. She doesn`t have a ticket to the theatre.

And the last sentence:

What`s wrong with you? You are/are being so noisy these days. Choose the correct tense-form of the verb ‘to be’ here. ___ It`s an unusual way of behavior at present time. Это необычная линия поведения в настоящем времени. So, we use ‘to be’ in the Present Continuous here. Поэтому, мы используем глагол ‘to be’ в Настоящем Длительном времени.
