Hello everyone,

In today’s lesson we’ll have a look at phrasal verbs.

Phrasal verbs are very common in spoken and written English. So we need them to understand and speak natural English.

What is a Phrasal Verb?

Phrasal verb is a verb followed by a preposition or an adverb; the combination creates a meaning different from the original verb.

1. Read the verbs. Which of them are phrasal:

The phrasal verbs are come, turn, put, keep and carry.

2. Match the prepositions with their meanings when used with come.

come across – встретить случайно

come up with - придумать

come into – получить в наследство

come over – навещать

come from – происходить

come out – обнаруживать

come down with - заболеть

3. Find mistakes in the chains.

put – off – откладывать

put – on – одеваться

put up – давать приют

put – down – критиковать, унижать

put – up with – мириться, примириться

4. Complete the empty boxes with the prepositions or translations.

keep something from – беречь от, хранить в тайне

keep away from something – избегать, держаться далеко

keep something down – не увеличивать (звук

keep on doing something – продолжить что-либо делать

keep up with something – не отставать от чего-либо.

5. Match the prepositions with their meanings when used with go.

go into – обсуждать в деталях

go ahead with – начинать, приступать

go away – уходить, покидать

go through – пройти через, получить опыт

go on – продолжать

6. Match the prepositions and their translations.

talk  back to somebody – огрызаться

talk into somebody – убеждать

talk somebody round – переубеждать кого-либо

8. Complete the boxes with the correct prepositions.
