Phrasal verb PUT

Dora: Come on, Jimmy! Put on your trainers and let’s go to the gym.

Jimmy: Leave me alone!

Dora: Jimmy, put aside your laptop and get back to real life.

Your room is in a terrible mess! When was the last time you had a haircut?

Jimmy: Okay, okay…. I’ll do it tomorrow.

Dora: No, Jimmy! Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today!

I have another lesson for you on phrasal verbs. Today it’s the turn of “PUT”. Don’t put this lesson off!

As you might remember, phrasal verbs are very common in spoken and written English. So we need them to understand and speak natural English.

Phrasal verb is a verb followed by a preposition or an adverb;

the combination creates a meaning different from the original verb.

The verbs with “put” are very popular in English.

In its primary meaning the phrasal verb “put” is translated like:

- класть, ставить;

- помещать;

- приделывать, прилаживать.

But if it is used with any of these prepositions: back, off, out, through, on, together, aside, down and over it has a completely different meaning and some of them have more than one. So let’s consider all of them.

Put on

The first meaning is to wear – надевать (одежду, обувь, очки, и т.п.), наносить косметику.

E.g. I put on my green suit to go to the party.

Another meaning is to turn on something electrical. – включать, приводить в действие.

E.g. Put the light on! I can’t see.

One more meaning is to trick/deceive somebody. – подшучивать над кем-то, ставить в смешное положение.

E.g. I was such a fool; they simply had put me on.

To put on also means to gain weight – набирать, прибавлять (о весе).

E.g. He put on weight over the holidays.

Put out

The first meaning is to extinguish (a fire or cigarette) – тушить, гасить (свет, сигарету, пожар).

E.g. The firemen managed to put out the fire very quickly.

Another meaning is to produce/publish – издавать, выпускать (книги, товар).

E.g. They put out a newspaper every Sunday. It's worth reading.

One more meaning is to cause somebody trouble, extra work. – причинять неудобство, беспокоить.

E.g. Our friend stayed in a small hotel because he didn't want to put us out.

To put back means to return something to its usual place. – вернуть на место.

E.g. After you’re done using the dictionary, put it back.

Put the trolley back where you took it.

To put off

The first meaning is to change something to a later time or date – откладывать, переносить (на более поздний срок).

E.g. I really should go to the doctor but I keep putting it off.

Another meaning is to make somebody dislike somebody/something or not trust them/it – вызывать отвращение.

E.g. He's very clever but his bossy manner does tend to put people off.

One more meaning is to disturb somebody who is trying to concentrate on something – мешать, отвлекать.

E.g. The sudden noise put her off her work.

Put down

The first meaning is to write on a piece of paper – записывать.

E.g. I put down bread, cheese, and butter in a shopping list.  – What else do we need to get?

Another meaning is to criticize and humiliate – критиковать, принижать.

E.g. You never support me. You are always putting me down.

One more meaning is to stop holding/carrying something – опускать, класть.

E.g. Put down those heavy bags you’re carrying and take a seat.

Put aside

The first meaning is to save (especially money/time) = put away, put by – экономить, приберегать.

E.g. We put some money aside every month for our retirement.

Another meaning is to ignore or forget something – прекратить, не обращать внимание (о разногласиях, чувствах).

E.g. Let's put aside our differences and enjoy the evening.

Put up

The first meaning is to let somebody stay at your home – приютить.

E.g. Can you put me up for a few days while I’m in London?

Another meaning is to fix something in a place where it will be seen – вывешивать (объявление, плакат).

E.g. We have put up posters around the city.

One more meaning is to increase prices, taxes – повышать (цены, налоги).

E.g. They've put up the rent by £20 a month.

Put up (with) means to tolerate something, you don’t like – терпеть, мириться с чем-либо.

E.g. I have to put up with my son’s keenness on football.

Put through

The first meaning is to connect somebody by telephone – соединять (по телефону).

E.g. Could you put me through to Mr Gordon, please?

Another meaning is to make somebody experience something difficult or unpleasant – заставить испытать/перенести что-либо неприятное.

E.g. I must have put my parents through hell when I was a teenager.

Put together

The first meaning is to make something by fitting or collecting parts together – собирать (все части вместе).

E.g. This Lego set is very easy to put together.

Another meaning is to combine/unite – сплотить, объединить.

E.g. We put our efforts together to work on this project.

Put over/across means to explain or express something clearly so that people

understand it easily – объяснить, убедить, донести.

E.g. He's very good at putting his views across.

This advertisement will put over the best qualities of our product.
