Конспект урока "The Past Simple Tense: irregular verbs"

Hello, boys and girls! My name is Bobby.

And my name is Tobby. This is our friend Mobby.

Welcome to our lesson.

Today we have a guest.

It’s a postman.

Hi, everyone! My name is Mr. White.

Mr. White brought us a letter.

It’s from our friend Frank.

As you know, he is in the USA at this moment.

Thank you, Mr. White.

You’re welcome! Bye, boys!

Bye, Mr. White.

Guys, let’s read the letter! I can’t wait to hear the news from Frank.

Yeah! I agree with Tobby.

All right! Let’s start reading it.

“Hello, my dear friends! Thank you for your response letter and it was great to hear from you. In this letter you asked me to tell you about my favorite day of the week. Well, it’s definitely Saturday. You know that last Saturday my grandparents and I visited the zoo and the circus. I told you about that in my previous letter, but I forgeted to tell you that after the circus we comed home and ordered a huge pizza. It was so delicious! In the evening we goed to the store and my grandparents buyed lots of sweets there such as cookies, candies, chocolate bars, cupcakes and waffles. I was really happy that day!

Guys, tell me about your favorite days in your next letter. Hope to hear from you soon. Your best friend, Frank!”

Wow! I’m so happy for Frank.

Yeah, me too! But I miss him. When will he come back?

Oh, I’m not sure, but I think he will be back in two weeks.

That’s great!

Guys, I also look forward to seeing Frank, but did you notice anything strange in his letter?

No, I didn’t.

Bobby, what about you? Did you notice anything?

Yes, I did! Frank made a few mistakes in the letter.

Four mistakes, to be exact!

Really?

Yes!

I didn’t even notice them. Could you show me all the mistakes, please?

Sure! Let’s look through Frank’s letter once again and discuss these mistakes.

The 1st mistake in this letter is in the word “forgeted”. Frank needed to write “forgot” instead of it. The 2nd mistake is in the word “comed”. Here he had to write “came”. The 3rd mistake is in the word “goed”. Here Frank needed to use the word “went”. And the last mistake is in the word “buyed”. Instead of this word, Frank had to write the word “bought”.

Boys, you’re right! Frank made four mistakes in his letter.

And all these mistakes are connected to the irregular verbs in the Past Simple Tense.

Guys, we have to tell Frank about these mistakes.

Yes, I agree! He’s our friend!

Boys, you’re right! And we will tell him, but let’s do that when he returns home.

Oh, okay! That’s a good idea!

But what are we going to do today?

Oh, today we are going to explain this rule to our audience.

Guys, as you can understand, today in the lesson we will:

talk about the irregular verbs in the Past Simple Tense;

revise when this tense can be used;

And

learn how to form sentences with the irregular verbs in the Past Simple Tense.

Boys and girls, first of all, you need to know that English verbs can be:

Regular (the translation is “правильные”)

And

Irregular (the translation is “неправильные”).

And as we’ve already said, today we are going to talk about the irregular verbs in the Past Simple Tense. But before we do that, let’s answer the question: “When do we use the Past Simple Tense?”

The Past Simple Tense is used to describe actions, which happened in the past. They are completed.

For example:

Mr. Green sold all the pink roses yesterday.

Or

Kevin and Kyle saw a clown two days ago.

We can also use this tense to talk about a series of completed actions in the past.

For example:

First, Jessica did her homework, then she read the book.

Or

On Saturday Nicole swept the floor, then she washed the dishes.

Guys, we’ve already told you how to form sentences with regular verbs in the Past Simple Tense. Now let’s answer the question: “How do we form sentences with the irregular verbs in the Past Simple Tense?”

To form positive sentences, we put the subject in the first place. Then we put the second form of the verb.

Guys, I think that some pupils don’t know the meaning of the phrase “the second form of the verb”?

Oh, you are absolutely right!

We have to explain the meaning of this phrase to everyone.

Boys and girls, first of all, you need to know that we have a table of the irregular verbs. Let’s take a look at a small piece of this table.

When we say the second form of the verb, it means that we need to find the verb in the table and look at its form in the second column.

For example:

The second form of the verb “do” is “did”.

The second form of the verb “draw” is “drew”.

The verb “dream” becomes “dreamt” in the Past Simple Tense.

The verb “drink” becomes “drank”.

The second form of the verb “eat” is “ate”.

The second form of the verb “fall” is “fell”.

The verb “find” becomes “found” in the Past Simple Tense.

The verb “forget” becomes “forgot”.

And the second form of the verb “forgive” is “forgave”.

Pay attention! The table of the irregular verbs is very big! And now on the screen you see only the small piece of it.

Let’s look at the examples:

The boy caught lots of fish yesterday.

My dad read a book last Friday.

Or

George rode a bike two days ago.

To form negative sentences, we put the subject in the first place, then we use the word “did” with the particle “not”. The short form is “didn’t”. After that we put the base form of the verb.

For example:

The boy didn’t catch lots of fish yesterday.

My dad didn’t read a book last Friday.

Or

George didn’t ride a bike two days ago.

And to form questions, we put the word “did” in the first place. Then we put the subject. After that we need to use the base form of the verb.

For example:

Did the boy catch lots of fish yesterday?

Did my dad read a book last Friday?

Or

Did George ride a bike two days ago?

Guys, we’ve told you everything you need to know about the irregular verbs in the Past Simple Tense.

That’s all for today, boys and girls!

We hope you liked the lesson.

See you soon.
