2. We also use the modal verb “can” to ask for or give permission.

How do we form sentences with the verb “can”?

To form positive sentences, we put the subject in the first place. Then we put the modal verb “can”. After that we need to use the main verb.

Let’s look at the example:

My brother can sing very well!

To form negative sentences, we put the subject in the first place. Then we put the word “can” with the particle “not”, the short form is “can’t”. And after that we need to use the main verb.

Now look at the example:

My brother can’t sing very well!

To form questions, we put the word “can” in the first place. Then we put the subject. And after that we use the main verb.

Now look at the example:

Can my brother sing very well?

To give short answers to the questions, we can use one of the following two constructions:

The first construction.

In the first place we put the word “yes”. After that we use the personal pronoun.

And then we need to put the modal verb “can”.

And the second construction.

In the first place we put the word “no”. After that we use the personal pronoun.

And then we need to put the word “can” with the particle “not”.
