Norse Mythology

Norse mythology is the mythology of the people from the Nordic countries. It includes stories of gods and heroes, like Odin and Thor. The Norse gods lived in a beautiful place called Asgard, which was connected to Earth by a rainbow bridge called Bifrost.

Odin was the king of the gods. He had two ravens, Huginn and Muninn, who flew around the world every day and told him what they saw. He also had an eight-legged horse called Sleipnir. Odin was very wise and knew many secrets. He gave one of his eyes to drink from the Well of Wisdom.

Thor was the god of thunder. He was very strong and carried a magical hammer called Mjolnir. When Thor threw his hammer, it always came back to him. People today still say 'Thursday' in memory of Thor. Another famous god was Loki. He was a trickster and liked to play pranks on the other gods. Sometimes he helped them, but sometimes he caused problems.

The Norse believed that there would be a final battle between the gods and the giants. This battle was called Ragnarok. During Ragnarok, the world would be destroyed and the gods would die. But after the battle, a new world would rise up from the ashes.

There are many stories about the Norse gods. In one story, Thor's hammer was stolen by a giant and Thor had to dress as a bride to get it back! In another story, Loki cut off all of the goddess Sif's hair as a joke. To make it grow back, the other gods had to capture a magical creature with golden hair.

Many English words come from Norse mythology. For example, the word 'berserk' comes from a word for a type of warrior who wore bear skins. The word 'helmet' comes from the name of the Norse goddess of the dead, Hel.
