Начальный этап.
I am sure you are fond of reading and some of you may say reading is your hobby. Is it so? But tell me what American and English writers you know. You also know many literary characters. Listen and guess who they are:
went down the rabbit hole (Alice)
could use an umbrella as a mean of transport (Marry Poppins)
tried to get honey with the help of a balloon (Winnie-the-Pooh)
walked by himself (The Cat)
made the Elephant’s Child’s nose long (the Crocodile)
was Maugly’s teacher in the jungle (Baloo)
And now listen to a short extract from a book and guess what book it is from. “Tom”! no answer. “Tom”! no answer. “What’s gone with that boy, I wonder?” So today we are going to talk about Mark Twain, his books and characters.
Основной этап.
Now listen to Twain’s biography and be ready to answer some questions and say what you’ve learnt about this writer.
Mark Twain is a famous American writer. His real name was Samuel Clements and “mark Twain” was his pen-name. S. Clements was born in a small town on the Missouri River in the U.S.A. The boy had many friends at school and when he became a writer, he described them in his stories. When Samuel was twelve, his father died and the boy began to work and learnt the profession of a printer. Samuel always wanted to be a sailor and when he was twenty, he found work on a river-boat. After some time he left the boat and went to live in California. There he began to write short humorous stories under the name of Mark Twain. He sent them to newspapers. The readers liked his stories. A number of professions that he knew helped him to show life and people. In 1876 he published his best novel “The Adventure of Tom Sawyer” which boys and girls in many countries know and like very much. The profession of a writer didn’t bring much money to M. Twain. He had to write articles to newspapers. He also travelled from place to place and read his short stories in concerts. But we must not think M. Twain was only a humorist and spent his whole life telling jokes. He understood everything he saw and among things he saw around him, there was much that was not funny. He saw the poor people of America and the difference between their world and the world of the rich. When he wrote about such things, his humor changed into irony and satire.
Well, and now answer some of my questions.
Where did M. Twain live?
What was his real name?
What kind of stories did he write?
What is his best novel?
Have you read his books in Russian\ English?
Many funny stories are connected with the name of M. Twain. Watch, listen and think the heading. ( Инсценировка. Действующие лица: автор, Марк Твен, инспектор).
One of M. Twain’s hobbies was fishing. He went fishing when he had a chance, even in a closed season, when fishing was not allowed in lakes and rivers. Like all fishermen, he sometimes invented stories about the number of fish he had caught. One day during a close season M. Twain was fishing as usual under a low bridge. A man who was walking across the bridge noticed M. Twain and began to watch him. At last he asked:
Have you caught many fish?
Not yet. I have only just begun. But yesterday I caught thirty great big fish here.
You were very lucky. Do you know who I am?
No. I don’t think I ever happened to meet you before.
I am the fishing inspector in this place. Do you know that this is the closed season?
Mark Twain thought quickly. He understood how foolish he had been and said:
But do you know who I am?
No, of course not.
I am the biggest liar on the Mississippi.
So, I think you enjoyed the acting. What title can you give to this story? Tell us what Twain’s hobby was.
The action of many Twain’s books takes place on the banks of the Mississippi River, the greatest river of America.
Pupil 1 – The Mississippi has given material to poets, novelists and song-writers. You can read a famous description of the river in the book “Life on the Mississippi” by M. Twain. The Mississippi River is one of the greatest waterways in the world. It is important in American history. Indian canoes, Spanish boats, rafts of the early settlers and later paddle-wheeled steamboats travelled up and down the Mississippi. To the millions of people who lived along its banks theMississippi was known as “Old Man River”.
To many boys and girls in Russia M. Twain is known as the author of the novel “The Adventure of Tom Sawyer.” Look at the pictures. You see Tom Sawyer. Your classmates have drawn these pictures. Do you like them? And now watch how your classmates act the scene from the novel.
P.1, P.2, P.3.
Tom Sawyer was a small boy who lived with his Aunt Polly. She was a very kind person and she loved him dearly. But she couldn’t manage Tom properly as he was a very lively boy. He was certainly not the model boy of the village.
Tom! Oh, my God! Where is he? I’ll find him! Tom! Oh, what a naughty boy! Tom, if I get hold of you, I’ll beat you! What? In the cupboard again?
No, Aunt Polly!
No? Look at your mouth. Look at your hands. What is that on them?
I don’t know, Aunt.
But I know. It’s jam. I’ve told you so many times: don’t touch that jam in the cupboard. Give me a stick.
Look behind you, Aunt!
What a boy! Why can’t I learn? He has played that trick on me before. But I can’t beat him. He is my sister’s boy.
Заключительный этап. Подведение итогов.
So, we are coming to the end of our work. Did you like our journey to M. Twain’s world? I want to thank all the pupils, especially our actors and artists. I think you’ve learnt some new interesting information about M. Twain, his life and his works. Your classmates have brought these books. So, if you want to read them, to feel yourself in the world of M. Twain you may ask and take the books to read. And of course it’s more interesting and useful to read Twain’s books in English, so study English, try your best and you’ll read his book in English.
