The aim of the project is to find out about technology addiction and if the teens of our school are addicted to new technologies.

The object of the project is new technologies.

The subject of the project is the influence of new technologies on the life of teens.

The hypothesis of the project is that technology is a wonderful thing and helps in making our daily lives easier and gives us many pleasures, but many teens get addicted to it so much.

The tasks are

  • to collect the information about technology addiction;

  • to do the survey “Are you addicted to technology?” among the teens of our school

  • to prepare the Power Point Presentation

  • to give the teens some advice how to avoid being addicted

Technology has developed considerably; it has become an integral part of our lives.

Telephones, televisions, cell phones, game consoles and the Internet have all contributed to making our lives a little bit easier, a little more convenient and a little bit more enjoyable.

We are surrounded by hi-tech equipments.

No matter what we are in car, in bed, at the dinner table, in classrooms, in gatherings, even in bathrooms we must reach out for our favourite gadgets regardless.

63 pupils took part in the survey “Hi-Tech Generation”. They were suggested 9 items of new technologies to choose from. We wanted to find out what gadgets do the teens own.

  • Mobile phone 100 %

  • Computer 73 %

  • Digital camera 59%

  • DVD 57 %

  • TV 57%

  • MP3 player 54%

  • Laptop 37%

  • Hi-fi system 36 %

  • E-book device 33%

Teens use their new I-things, laptops, and tablets to access the internet effortlessly. Phones endlessly fire off texts. Statuses are posted to social networking sites like Facebook, VK and Twitter. Random Google searches have become something like a sport. That’s all great, but it has turned into an addiction.

What is technology addiction?

Technology addiction has been described as being similar to any other types of addiction.

Any kind of addiction is a disorder and is often described as using something more often than you intend. The first signs of technology addiction are: spending a great deal of time using it and giving up important social, family or occupation activities.

A study found out that technology addiction is the main source of lack of sleep, blurring vision, headaches and most importantly teenagers are having a disruptive effect on their learning skills, particularly spellings. Students use net to copy material without even reading it at least once, though knowing it is a plagiarism.
In short, the life of a tech addict becomes frantic.

The survey among the teens of our school

There were 39 teens from the age of 14-18 who took part in the survey «Are you addicted to technology?»

The questions of the survey

    1. How old are you?

  1. Do you tweet or read blogs? How many hours a day?

  2. Can you type text messages faster than you can handwrite the same words?

  3. Do you eat most of your meals while at the computer or in front of the television?

  4. Are you closer only with some online
    friends rather than with people you actually see in real life?

  5. Do you have 3 or more active social media accounts? What are they?

  6. Do you buy things on line?

  7. You get home from school and drop your bag as soon as you step inside the door. What is the first thing that you do?

a) turn on your TV and text on your mobile phone a little bit;

b) head to your room to get online Facebook, VK, etc;

c) walk into the kitchen to get a snack.

  1. Have you a fear of being without your mobile phone?

  2. If you were in the wildness? How long would it take you to become upset because you don’t have technology?

a) 1 minute;

b) maybe an hour;

c) maybe a couple of ours;

d) maybe a day or 2;

e) probably about a week;

f) longer than that.

  1. Do you have the following gadgets on you own? (mobile phone, digital camera, DVD, computer, MP3 player, TV, e-book device, laptop, hi-fi system)

THE RESULTS OF OUR SURVEY

74 % of the teens tweet and read blogs;

15% do it about an hour; 28 % - about 2 hours; 39 %- more than 3 hours, 18% - more than 4 hours.

76 % of the teens can type messages faster than they can handwrite the same words;

61% buy things online;

76 % eat at the computer or in front of the television;

92% of teens say they are closer with friends in real life;

82% have 3 or more active social media accounts (the most popular are ICQ, VK and Facebook)

59% head to get online as soon as the come home;

65% have nomophobia (fear of being out of mobile phone contact)

33% would take longer than a week to become upset because they don’t have technology

We came into conclusion that though some teens can do without technologies for a long time, a great number of others are addicted to their gadgets and even have a nomophobia (fear of being out of phone contact).
