THE SCREENINGS OF «AND QUIET FLOWS THE DON»

A. In 2015 the whole country will celebrate the 110 anniversary of Mikhael Sholokhov. Sholokhov is an outstanding Russian Soviet novelist and the greatest prose writer of XX century. He also was a journalist who wrote for different journals during World War II. The most famous work of the writer is And Quiet Flows the Don, which earned the Stalin Prize, became the most read work of Soviet fiction and was a powerful example of socialist realism, and won him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1965. This novel included in the list of the greatest works of the world's Literature tells about tragic situation in Russia in the beginning of XX century, about the fates, which were broken because of World War I and the revolution, about the destruction of hopes, ideals.

B. Many Sholokhov's works were staged such as The Fate of a Man , Unasked Love, When Cossacks cry, They Fought for the Motherland , Virgin Soil Upturned, Saucy Young Kipper .The novel And Quiet Flows the Don was filmed 3 times : in 1931, in 1958, in 1992 . Only the first and the second parts of the novel were screened in 1931. The filmmakers and screen-writers Olga Preobrazhenskaya and lvan Pravov screened a silent film. Mikhail Sholokhov consulted them personally. This film had a difficult way to a viewer, the film was tried not to be shown. Emma Tsesarskaya , Nikolay Podgornyi , Andrey Abricosov were stars of the Soviet silent cinema.

C. During 1955-1958 the film was screened by Sergey Gerasimov, where the main roles were starred by these famous actors such as Peter Glebov, Elina Bystritskaya, Zinaida Kirienko, Igor Dmitriev. The novel's author approved the filmmaker's screen version, Gerasimov began to work on three episode parts colour film. The shooting started in 1956 in August, By Sholokhov's advice the film was started to shot not far from Kamensk-Shakhtinsk in the village Dichenk. The filmmaker was choosing the actors very attentively. And the chosen ones played their roles greatly. Many actors had been in the image of their heroes: the actresses (Bystritskaya, Khityaeva) went for water with the rocker-arms. The local people helped, advised to the actors, suggested a lot. Due to that the film had a great success in our country and abroad. In 1957 the film was finished then the third part was shot in 1958. The film was awarded the prize «Crystal Globe» in the international cinema festival in Karlovy, Vary, the diploma in the international festival in Mexico.

D. The third time the novel was screened in 1990-1992. It was a joint work of the cinematographers of Russia, Great Britain, Italy. In 1990 Sergey Bondarchuk began writing a screen version which consisted of 13 episodes. In 1992 the film’s work was interrupted due to lack of finance. In 1994 the filmmaker died. The materials to the film were brought by the producer to London. More than 10 years Bondarchuk’s family tried to return the film to Russia. In 2005 it became possible to buy back the film’s materials. A son of the filmmaker Fedor Bondarchuk had shot a serial which consisted of 7 series. The film caused conflicting responses. Many viewers keeping in memory wonderful acting of Russian actors pointed out dissimilarity of the foreign star actors with Cossacks. The main roles played Rupert Everet, Dolphin Forest, Farid Mgorrey, Alina Bondarchuk, Boris Shcherbakov.

E. The famous filmmaker Sergey Ursulyak is going to make another movie, he is planning to begin the shooting in spring in 2014, and in 2015 this serial will be shown to us.
