Subculture

A subculture is a group of people within a complex culture who have interests that are different from those of the mainstream culture.

I think that a subculture is a group with a distinct style and identity. Different subcultures have their own beliefs, value systems, fashion, and favorite music.

Subculture is formed on the base of music, art or cinematographic adoration.

Teenagers unite in groups, they create their own rules, policy and, of course, they have the main idea that serves as base for the whole movement.

Rastafarians is a Black youth subculture and religious movement that arose in the ghettos of Kingston, Jamaica, in the 1950s.

What is hot with the young generation?

Hackers

They are the 'wizards' of the computer community; people with a deep understanding of how their computers work, and can do things with them that seem 'magical'. They do not protest against their parents.

Punks

A young person who dresses in a shocking way to express his other identity . He or she has brightly colored hair and wears metal chains. The person is thought to rebel against the society. The music is aggressive. They reject everything.

Goths

The members of this subculture wear the blackest black, with a lot of silver jewelry and have very black hair and look as thin and pale as possible. The members gather together to read Bram Stoker and talk about being vampires, and about the end of the world.

• The hippie subculture was originally a youth movement that arose in the United States during the mid – 1960s and spread to other countries around the world .

• They wear natural textiles, tie-dyed and paisley prints were also trendy. A lot of people created their own things with accessories and individual objects were regularly adorned with fringes and beads.

• Their slogans are: « Make Love, Not War » , « Give Peace A Chance » ,

« All You Need Is Love » .

• Their favorite music is rock-and-roll.

Ravers

These are the folks who use computer-made, synthesized music, and drugs to create massive all-night dance parties in empty warehouses( склад ). They like to be in a collective. They want to try out all sort of options (to test all things that they can choose) and are thought to be violent (showing strong physical force).

Punks – wear jeans, red laces, studded jackets, army pants, safety pins.

Mods - use their income to buy stylish clothes. Prefer scooters for transportation.

Hippies were well known for being young, radical and rebellious. Use drugs (marijuana). Slogan – “All you need is love”.

Bikers - wear black leather jackets and jeans and boots; had greased hair and ride motorcycles and listen to rock'n'roll.

Emo – wear a bright colored skinny jeans and body hugging T-shirts with pictures of emo bands on them.

Rastafarians - Black youth subculture, have long dreadlocks and wear woolen caps. Use drugs.

Ravers – go to underground dance parties, prefer “techno” music.

Goths – have black hair and dark make-up. Prefer to listen to the Gothic rock.

Skinheads – have shaved heads and heavy boots. Very aggressive. Their symbols are crosses or swastika.

The history of rock and pop

‘ Pop’ is short for ‘popular’ and there has always been popular music. But until the 1950 there wasn’t a style of music just for young people. That all changed when rock and roll began. Since then, hundreds of styles and stars have come and gone. Musical technology has changed a lot too. Here, we look at the highlights of rock and pop’s history.

The 50’s

Rock and roll began in America. Some of its first big stars were black – for example Chuck Berry, Fats Domino and Little Richard. They brought traditional ‘rhythm and blues’ to a big new TV audience. Then, white singers began to copy them. Among them were Bill Haley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holy and others. But the most popular of them all was Elvis Aaron Presley.

Elvis wasn’t like the American singers of the ’40s and early ’50. He wasn’t neat, sweet and safe. He was rough, tough and dangerous. His music was dangerous, too. He called himself ‘The King of Rock and Roll’ and played an electric guitar.

The 60’s

Pop exploded in the ’60s. After Elvis, hundreds of new groups and singers appeared. In Britain, two groups quickly became more popular than all the others. One was ‘The Rolling Stones'. They played hard, aggressive rock and roll. The other group played a mixture of rock and pop. They came from Liverpool. Their name was ‘The Beatles’.

In Detroit(the USA) producer Berry Gordy started a new record label – Motown. Stars on the Motown included Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder and the Jackson Five(including the youngest of the Jackson brothers, Michael).

There were stars who mixed folk music with rock and pop styles: Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, James Taylor and Simon and Garfunkel.

Finally, there was “hippy rock”. This was the time of “flower-power” and protests against the Vietnam War. It was also the time when rock festivals became important. The biggest, in 1969 was on a farm in New York State called “Woodstock”.

The 70’s

Two groups show the different sides of ’70s pop – “ABBA” and “The Sex Pistols”. Sweden’s “ABBA” worked with the latest technology. Their songs were popular with people from 8 to 80. They were rich. They

made videos. There were a lot of other ’70s superstars, too – Elton John, David Bowie, Rod Stewart, “ Queen ”.

But for many people that superstar pop didn’t take enough risks. Some of them decided to play a new, more dangerous kind of music – punk rock.

The punk revolution began in small clubs. Everything about their clothes and music was different. They didn’t look happy and rich. They looked poor and angry. They didn’t smile – they spat. They weren’t good musicians – many of them couldn’t play their instruments at all.

Groups like “The Sex Pistols” brought new energy to music. Punk started as a revolution…by 1980 it was a fashion.

The 80’s

The most important musical event of the ’80s was “Live Aid”. Live Aid’s stars included Sting, Sade, U2, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Madonna, Mick Jagger, Tina Turner, “The Beach Boys” ,Paul McCartney and others, who raised money for the starving people.

Techno culture is a youth movement, Shrill, colorful and spontaneous. What makes it very different is its tolerance and openness and its opposition to strict political ideologies.
