In Russia New Year’s Day is the most popular and widely celebrated winter festival.

Christmas in Russia is celebrated on January 7th as the Russian Orthodox Church uses the Julian calendar. Besides there are many non-Christians in Russia.

In Russia the custom of celebrating the New Year began in 1700. It was Peter the Great who brought this tradition from Germany.

We decorate the Christmas tree, go round the New Year tree in a circle holding hands with each other (it is called “Horovod”) sing traditional song “ Little fir-tree” 

- We meet our family and friends

- light fireworks

- eat tasty food

- give and get presents

- listen to the president’s speech on TV

- we count the last seconds of the past year and welcome the new year.

- Father Frost is older than Santa.

- He wears a long coat.

- He has a long beard.

- He travels in a sleigh.

Russian Santa is called FATHER FROST . He has got a granddaughter – the SNOWGIRL

The traditional food is

• Salad
• Meat and potatoes
• Tangerines
• Sweets and cakes

Winter is usually cold in Russia but we like spending time outdoors

We enjoy playing snowballs and making snowmen.

Boys play hockey.

Girls like skating.

We sledge down the snow hills

Some people swim in an ice water (Those people are called walruses)

We usually have a New Year party at school.
