In Russia New Year’s Day is the most popular and widely celebrated winter festival.
Christmas in Russia is celebrated on January 7th as the Russian Orthodox Church uses the Julian calendar. Besides there are many non-Christians in Russia.
In Russia the custom of celebrating the New Year began in 1700. It was Peter the Great who brought this tradition from Germany.
We decorate the Christmas tree, go round the New Year tree in a circle holding hands with each other (it is called “Horovod”) sing traditional song “ Little fir-tree”

- we count the last seconds of the past year and welcome the new year.
