Lesson Scenario

  1. Introduction

Prepare for the lesson. You can find cards. Use Additional materials to the lesson to set the classroom.

Lead-in

Greet the students (Ss) and ask them to look at the title of the lesson on the board. Elicit their answers about the topic of the lesson. Draw Ss’ attention to the pronunciation of the new words (get them repeat the words after you). Encourage accurate pronunciation of the sound [th]. Get Ss to repeat chorally and individually the tongue-twister “Not these things here but those things there”.

Using the questions in Ex. 1a,b, p 199 brainstorm Ss for the information they might already know about types of books. Share your personal experience with your Ss (I read…. My favourite types of books are …). Encourage them to talk about their personal experience. If Ss make mistakes, correct only the most important of them, to get them involved and motivated.

  1. Main part

Reading 1

Ss read the story “The giving tree” at home individually. Check if they learned the new words. Focus on the vocabulary introduced by the text.

The reading of the text is practised when Ss do exercise (Put the parts of the story into logical order). Ss work in groups of four and give their answers, discuss them with the whole class.

Speaking 1

Invite Ss to ask classmates the questions on the cards. First Ss have to put the words in the correct order to make questions. Monitor and help with the question formation. Then Ss ask and answer the questions in pairs. Monitor and check for accurate question formation. Go around the classroom helping your Ss if necessary.

Watching a video

To keep Ss motivated to further work show them a short video film “The giving tree” Let them share their impressions after the film in a free form (but in English of course). Ask them if they imagined the characters of the story the same way or not. Let Ss describe the boy and the tree adding their emotional content and give characteristics to the main characters of the story.

Reading 2

Invite Ss to sound the cartoon. Every S chooses a role and tries to read it individually. Remind Ss to think about stress and intonation, and then get Ss to role-play the story improving their reading skills.

Speaking 2

Ss work in small groups. Ss summarize the information they have received at the lesson

Invite Ss to answer the main questions of the lesson (How do you feel when you give something to someone? How do you feel when you receive something? Can you be “The giving tree” for your family, friends and nature?)

Writing
Write their ideas on the printed apples and decorate the apple tree. Let Ss express their opinion freely, correcting the most important mistakes in order not to discourage them.

  1. Final part

Follow-up

Ss read the task in printed cards. Check their understanding asking them: What are you to do as your homework? Would you like to do it? If some students are not willing (or are not prepared enough) to do it, offer them different options: speak or draw...

On the contrary, if you’ve got very motivated Ss, offer them to write the summary of the story.

Ask Ss if they enjoyed the lesson and why. Thank them for their work and enthusiasm at the lesson. Encourage their gratefulness to your work in return.

The giving tree by Shel Silverstein

Once there was a tree....
and she loved a little boy.
And every day the boy would come
and he would gather her leaves
and make them into crowns
and play king of the forest.
He would climb up her trunk
and swing from her branches
and eat apples.
And they would play hide-and-go-seek.
And when he was tired,
he would sleep in her shade.
And the boy loved the tree....
very much.
And the tree was happy.
But time went by.
And the boy grew older.
And the tree was often alone.
Then one day the boy came to the tree
and the tree said, "Come, Boy, come and
climb up my trunk and swing from my
branches and eat apples and play in my
shade and be happy."
"I am too big to climb and play" said
the boy.
"I want to buy things and have fun.
I want some money?"
"I'm sorry," said the tree, "but I
have no money.
I have only leaves and apples.
Take my apples, Boy, and sell them in
the city. Then you will have money and
you will be happy."
And so the boy climbed up the
tree and gathered her apples
and carried them away.
And the tree was happy.
But the boy stayed away for a long time....
and the tree was sad.
And then one day the boy came back
and the tree shook with joy
and she said, "Come, Boy, climb up my trunk
and swing from my branches and be happy."
"I am too busy to climb trees," said the boy.
"I want a house to keep me warm," he said.
"I want a wife and I want children,
and so I need a house.
Can you give me a house ?"
" I have no house," said the tree.
"The forest is my house,
but you may cut off
my branches and build a
house. Then you will be happy."
And so the boy cut off her branches
and carried them away
to build his house.

And the tree was happy.
But the boy stayed away for a long time.
And when he came back,
the tree was so happy
she could hardly speak.
"Come, Boy," she whispered,
"come and play."
"I am too old and sad to play,"
said the boy.
"I want a boat that will
take me far away from here.
Can you give me a boat?"
"Cut down my trunk
and make a boat," said the tree.
"Then you can sail away...
and be happy."
And so the boy cut down her trunk
and made a boat and sailed away.
And the tree was happy
... but not really.
And after a long time
the boy came back again.
"I am sorry, Boy,"
said the tree," but I have nothing
left to give you -
My apples are gone."
"My teeth are too weak
for apples," said the boy.
"My branches are gone,"
said the tree. " You
cannot swing on them - "
"I am too old to swing
on branches," said the boy.
"My trunk is gone, " said the tree.
"You cannot climb - "
"I am too tired to climb" said the boy.
"I am sorry," sighed the tree.
"I wish that I could give you something....
but I have nothing left.
I am just an old stump.
I am sorry...."
"I don't need very much now," said the boy.
"just a quiet place to sit and rest.
I am very tired."
"Well," said the tree, straightening
herself up as much as she could,
"well, an old stump is good for sitting and resting
Come, Boy, sit down. Sit down and rest."
And the boy did.
And the tree was happy.
