the oldest cities of
Eastern Europe. It is
situated on the hilly right bank and on the low left bank of the Dnieper River.

Kyi, Shchek, Khoryv and Lybid
- According to the Rus Primary Chronicle, the founders of Kyiv were the brothers Kyi, Shchek, and Khoryv, leaders of the Slavonic Polianian tribe. The city was named after the eldest, Kyi.
- Kyiv was founded in the latter half of the 5 th , or the early 6 th century.
Kyiv is more than fifteen hundred years old. That`s why it is rich in numerous historical monuments and ancient buildings.

was first mentioned in « A Tale
of Bygone Years » by Nestor the
Chronicler under the tear of 1051.
According to Nestor the Chronicler
the history of the Kyiv –Pechersk
Monastery was closely connected
with the caves. The monastery
received the name « Pechersk»
from these caves, which were origi
nally inhabited by monks. The
Monastery received the status of
Lavra in 1688.

Sophia of Kyiv was built during
Reign of Prince Yaroslav the
Wise in honour a great victory
gained by the Kyivans at this
site over the Pechenehy, who
had been constantly threaten

vered as a result of

cathedral.
The Cathedral and the entire set of buildings are of great cultural value for the Ukrainian people. It has therefore been declared a state monument – museum.
Mykhailivskyi Cathedral
- Mykhailivskyi Cathedral was built in 1108 - 1118 on the territory of the Mykhailivskyi Monastery. It was built by grandson of Yaroslav the Wise.His name was Svyatopolk Izyaslavovych.
- The cathedral was decorated with frescos and mosaics. In 1934 - 35 the cathedral was took apart. Some specimens of art haven`t come down to us. us.
Andriivskyi Uzviz
- Andriivskyi Uzviz is one of the best known historic streets and a main tourist attraction in Kyiv. It is the shortest way from the historic Old,or Upper Town, to the commercial Podil. The first buildings were put there in the 17 th century.
- During the 18 th and 19 th centuries, craftspeople lived in the street.
Although they are long gone, this is one of the best areas to find traditional crafts and arts.
Khreschatyk is the main street of Kyiv. It is very impressive any time of the year, but in spring this street is especially beautiful when chestnut trees, the symbol of Kyiv, are in blossom.

- The center of Kyiv (Maidan Nezalezhnosti and Khreschatyk Street) becomes a large outdoor party place at night during summer months, with thousands of people having good time in nearby clubs and outdoor cafes .
