English traditions
Each country has its own traditions. They make people remember their roots, help to find confidence in themselves and their relatives. It’s very important to know respect and keep traditions.
There are many customs in Britain and some of them are very ancient. There is, for example, a marble championship “Morris Dance” where the British dancers are crown; the winner gets a silver cup. The championship Morris Dance is an event when people are dressed up in beautiful clothes with tapes and hand bells, play the traditional music and dance, holding control handkerchiefs or big sticks in their hands.
Another example of popular tradition is rowing competitions which takes place on the river Thames on Easter Sunday. One boat with a team from Oxford University and another boat with a team from Cambridge university compete in speed.
Englishmen think that the big national horse races are the most fascinating race in the world. It takes place near Liverpool annually. Sometimes it happens in the same day when rowing competitions take place. Sometimes it happens a week later. Both amateur horse riders and professional jockeys can participate.
Halloween is a day, when people dress up unusual costumes. Originally this day was named Eve of all Halloween because it happened on October, 31st, on the eve of Day of all sacred. Later the name has been changed into “Halloween” .People decorate their houses with pumpkins, have Halloween parties and tell scary stories around the fire. Children knock the doors and shout “Trick or Treat”
One of the most popular custom of the year is the celebration ofNew Year’s Day. In London many people come to Trafalgar square to celebrate the eve of New Year. At midnight of the 31st of December they sing traditional songs and dance. Everybody is happy.
When we speak about English traditions we mean the old England. We certainly, always remember the traditional ceremony of drinking tea between lunch and a dinner. It is called “five o’clock tea” and is spendt between five and six o’clock in the evening. For Englishmen it is a good opportunity to have a good rest with a cup of tea.
One of the most interesting English traditions is the tradition of preparation the bride for wedding. To be happy in marriage the bride should put on something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue in her wedding day .
We can’t ignore such popular holiday as Christmas. According to the tradition this day in each house people decorate Christmas tree with lights and give Christmas presents to each other. They sing traditional Christmas songs. Turkey accompanied by cranberry is the main food on the Christmas dinner. Also you can see such dishes as Christmas pudding with a silver coin; «bast basket» with a stuffing from mince pie, etc. There is even a tradition connected with food on Christmas : if you eat twelve mince pies in twelve different houses during twelve days of Christmas, you will have a happy twelve month in the coming year! By the way, 12 days of Christmas are called Christmas-tide-Yuletide..
