      The Two Yankee Stadiums

      A. American sport would not be the same without Yankee Stadium. But did you know that there has been not one Yankee Stadium but two? They started building the first one in 1922 and it opened to the public in 1923. Located in the Bronx, an area of New York City, it had seating for over 56,000 spectators. Over the years, the stadium hosted some of the twentieth century’s most exciting baseball games, but it also hosted other major sporting events like boxing and football.

      B.Yankee Stadium is the new baseball stadium of the New York Yankees.It replaced the original Yankee Stadium, which the Yankees had played in since 1923. It was opened with an exhibition game against the Chicago Cubs on April 3, 2009. The first regular game was played on April 16, 2009. The new stadium cost $1.5 billion dollars to build. It was the most expensive baseball stadium in the world. It is built to look like the old Yankee Stadium. It has many new and more modern features.

      C.After 80 years, though, this American classic was looking a little tired and it needed some work. A new stadium was built opposite the old one, and the old one eventually demolished. Opened in 2009, the new Yankee Stadium looked very similar to its older relative. The pitch was the same size, but the seats were more comfortable for modern sports fans. Surprisingly, the new stadium only has seating for about 48,000 fans, almost 8,000 less than the old stadium. On the plus side, a huge new state-of-the-art screen allows the fans furthest from the action to see everything that’s happening on the pitch.

      D.Yankee Stadium isn’t just for sports fans, though. There’s a picnic area, a farmers’ market with fresh fruit and vegetables, and quite a few gift shops to pick up a souvenir. Guided tours offer the chance to learn about the history of the stadium, and you might be allowed into the areas the public usually don’t get to see like the changing rooms. If you’re interested in the history of sport, want to see the best baseball matches or are just looking for a great day out, then Yankee Stadium is the place for you.
