Ведущий: Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. We are glad to greet you at our literary party. Today we are going to speak about English writers such as Charles Dickens, Jerome K. Jerome, Charlotte Bronte. And now we'll get acquainted with them.

Информация о писателях (с показом презентации):

Ученик 1: Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens was born on February 7th, 1812 in Portsmouth, England. His father was an office man, who worked hard to provide for his family. Charles had many brother and sisters. When he was 10, his family moved to London, where his father got into debtor’s prison. After that, Charles left school to work in a factory. For two years he worked in a dirty room pasting labels on bottles. Then he went to school for three more years. He had little formal education but still succeeded in life. Over his career he wrote 15 novels, 5 novellas, hundreds of short stories and non-fiction articles. He also worked for 20 years as an editor in a weekly journal. Dickens’ other merits include campaigns for children’s rights, education and other social reforms.

Ученик 2:

He obtained international attention and fame in 1836 with a series of publications called “Pickwick Papers”. He used to be a young and poor reporter at that time, who immediately became a famous writer. Dickens published many other novels later. Among them “Oliver Twist”, “Dombey and Son”, “David Copperfield” and many others. His books are rather interesting to read. He mostly wrote about the hard life of poor people in Victorian England. Even though he lived more than a hundred years ago, people still read his books with pleasure. One of his most influential works ever written was “A Christmas Carol” novella. His fellow writers of that time highly praised his literary genius. Leo Tolstoy, George Orwell, Chesterton were among them. Charles Dickens died on June 9th, 1870 and he was buried in Poet’s Corner in Westminster Abbey.

Ученик 3: Jerome K. Jerome

In the history of English literature Jerome K. Jerome occupies a modest place. He is well known as a writer-humorist not only in his country but in another countries too.

Jerome Klapka Jerome was born in England on May 2, 1859 into the family of ruined businessman. Jerome's childhood was poor and sad. He could not finish school because his father died in 1871 and the boy had to begin working to support his family. First he worked as a clerk. Later he took up teaching journalism and acting. For three years he was an actor and had to play different parts. He had very little money and often went hungry and had no place to sleep. In his free moments Jerome tried to write. He wrote plays, stories and articles, but nothing was published.

His first literary success was a one-act comedy which was performed in the Globe theatre in London in 1886.

Ученик 4:

In 1889 a collection of his articles was published. They were published as a book under the title The Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow. This book became very popular in England, and it was published 105 times in 4 years. In 1889 Jerome's best book Three Men in a Boat also came out.

The Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow and Three Men in a Boat made the author famous. The books were translated into many European languages. In the following years Jerome published several books and plays. He went travelling all over Europe and in 1899 he visited St. Petersburg, where he was met with enthusiasm. He knew Russian literature very well.

Jerome K. Jerome also wrote serious books, but the public didn't like them.

Jerome's last book was his autobiography My Life and Time. He died in 1927. The works of Jerome are full of humour and they can't but amuse the reader.

Ученик 5: Charlotte Brontе

Charlotte Brontе was born 21 April 1816. She attended Clergy Daughter’s School in Lancashire in 1824. However, she returned home next year because of the harsh conditions and the death of her two sisters. In 1831 she went to school at Roe Head, where she later worked as a teacher. However, she fell ill, suffered from melancholia, and gave up this post. Charlotte tried to work as a governess but her attempts were hindered by her shyness, her ignorance of normal children, and her yearning to be with her sisters.

In 1842 Charlotte travelled to Brussels with Emily to learn French, German, and management. She spent less than two years there and when she came back home she suffered from severe hypochondria.

Ученик 6:

In 1846 the three sisters – Charlotte, Emily and Ann published a book of Poems, and though sales were very slow, the reviews were quite good. Charlotte’s novel The Professor wasn’t successful at all.

In August of 1846 Charlotte began to work on Jane Eyre, which was published only in October, 1847 and immediately became popular. Charlotte dedicated the book to William Makepeace Thackeray, who described it as “the masterwork of a great genius”. The heroine of Jane Eyre is a penniless orphan who becomes a teacher, obtains a post as a governess, inherits money from an uncle, and then marries. In this book Charlotte used her experiences at the Evangelical school and as governess.

In the years of 1848 and 1849 Charlotte’s brother and her sister Ann died. Charlotte’s grief was reflected in the last third of the novel Shirley, which she had been working on at that time. The main character of the book is an independent, brave and outspoken woman.

In 1854 Charlotte Bronte married her father’s curate, Arthur Bell Nicholls. She died on March 31, 1855.

Ученик 7: Джером К. Джером. Как мы отказались пить реку (from the book «Three men in a boat» by Jerome K. Jerome)

We found that we didn’t have water and stopped at Hambledon lock. We took our jar and went up to the lock-keeper‘s house to ask for some. George was our spokesman. He put on a smile and said: “Oh, please, could you give us a little water?”

«Certainly,» — answered the old gentleman, — «take as much as you want, and leave the rest.»

«Thank you so much”, -murmured George, looking about him,-  «Where — where do you keep it?»

‘It’s always in the same place, my boy,»- was the answer, — «just behind you.»

«I don’t see it», — said George, turning round.

“Why, where are your eyes?”  — was the man’s comment as he pointed up and down the river,- «There’s enough water to see, isn’t there?»

«Oh», — exclaimed George, because he understood at last”, -  «but we can’t drink the river, you know!”

«No, but you can drink some of it», — answered the old fellow, — «It is what I have drunk for the last 15 years.”

George looked at him and said that his appearance did not seem a good advertisement for the brand; and he would prefer water out of a pump.

We left and got water from a cottage a little higher up. To tell the truth, it was water from the river, too. But at that moment we hadn’t known it. So, we drank it and it was all right.   What the eye does not see,  the stomach does not grieve over.

Ученик 8: Джейн Эйр. Описание красной комнаты. (from the book "Jane Eyre" by Charlotte Brontе )

The red-room was a square chamber, very seldom slept in, I might say never, indeed, unless when a chance influx of visitors at Gateshead Hall rendered it necessary to turn to account all the accommodation it contained yet it was one of the largest and stateliest chambers in the mansion. A bed supported on massive pillars of mahogany, hung with curtains of deep red damask, stood out like a tabernacle in the centre; the two large windows, with their blinds always drawn down, were half shrouded in festoons and falls of similar drapery; the carpet was red; the table at the foot of the bed was covered with a crimson cloth; the walls were a soft fawn colour with a blush of pink in it; the wardrobe, the toilet-table, the chairs were of darkly polished old mahogany. Out of these deep surrounding shades rose high, and glared white, the piled-up mattresses and pillows of the bed, spread with a snowy Marseilles counterpane. Scarcely less prominent was an ample cushioned easy-chair near the head of the bed, also white, with a footstool before it; and looking, as I thought, like a pale throne.

Ученик 9:

This room was chill, because it seldom had a fire; it was silent, because remote from the nursery and kitchen; solemn, because it was known to be so seldom entered. The house-maid alone came here on Saturdays, to wipe from the mirrors and the furniture a week’s quiet dust and Mrs. Reed herself, at far intervals, visited it to review the contents of a certain secret drawer in the wardrobe, where were stored divers parchments, her jewel-casket, and a miniature of her deceased husband; and in those last words lies the secret of the red-room—the spell which kept it so lonely in spite of its grandeur.

Ученик 10: О месте, где родился Оливер Твист (from the book "The Adventures of Oliver Twist", by Charles Dickens)

Among other public buildings in a certain town, whichfor many reasons it will be prudent to refrain frommentioning, and to which I will assign no fictitiousname, there is one anciently common to most towns, great or small: to wit, a workhouse; and in thisworkhouse was born; on a day and date which I neednot trouble myself to repeat, inasmuch as it can be ofno possible consequence to the reader, in this stage ofthe business at all events; the item of mortality whosename is prefixed to the head of this chapter.

For a long time after it was ushered into this world ofsorrow and trouble, by the parish surgeon, it remaineda matter of considerable doubt whether the childwould survive to bear any name at all; in which case itis somewhat more than probable that these memoirswould never have appeared; or, if they had, that beingcomprised within a couple of pages, they would havepossessed the inestimable merit of being the mostconcise and faithful specimen of biography, extant inthe literature of any age or country.
