Australia is the smallest continent, the biggest island and the 6th largest country in the world

Captain James Cook discovered Australia in 1770. He was one of the most important explorers in European history.

The Land down under

Australia is located in the Southern Hemisphere. Summer is from December to February, meaning it is hot at Christmas time.

The outback

The ‘outback’ is a huge territory with people living hundreds of miles away from each other. So how do kids go to school? Well they don’t actually go to school, they learn via a radio and soon technology will help too.

Canberra

The capital city of Australia is Canberra. It’s thought to mean “meeting place”

The Australian flag has three sections, the Commonwealth Star, the Southern Cross

and the Union Jack.

The Great Barrier Reef is the longest reef and the largest organic construction in the world. It is about 2,010 kms long and is so big it can be seen from space.

Australia is home to a variety of unique animals, including the koala, kangaroo, emu, kookaburra and platypus.

Cassowary has been named the world’s most dangerous bird in the world in the Guinness Book of Records.

There are about 100 million sheep in Australia, making it the country with the second largest sheep population.

The longest fence in the world

The fence or the Dingo Fence is approximately 5,614 kms long was constructed to protect sheep flocks from wild animals.

The Eucalyptus

Australia has the fastest growing trees in the world, the Eucalyptus, which can grow as much as 10 metres in a year!

Uggs

Ugg boots were actually invented in Australia, but they are not too keen on them.

The locals call them ‘very ugly boots’.

Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi is claimed by the Australians as the invention of its National Science Agency.

Selfie

Selfie, is an Australian slang term. It was first used in an online forum in 2002.
