The Effective and Innovating Ways of Teaching Foreign Languages
Interactive Teaching Method
An interactive teaching method involves interaction between a teacher and a student in a dialogue or conversation mode. The essence of interactive teaching methods is that they are focused not only on the wide interaction between the teacher and the students, but also on the interaction between the students themselves.
Types of the Interactive Method
Jigsaw
The jigsaw(зигзаг) technique is a method of organizing classroom activity that makes students dependent on each other to succeed. It breaks classes into groups and breaks assignments into pieces that the group assembles to complete the ( jigsaw ) puzzle.
Can be used when working with grammar material . For example, when studying the topic The Present Perfect Tense, the class is asked to fill out a table with the columns: “Use cases” / “Markers” / “Schemes”. The class is divided into three groups. All groups fill the entire table. Each team has experts on “use cases,” “markers,” patterns.” They meet, consult, then bring information to their groups. As a result of interaction, students systematize knowledge on the topic being studied.
Aquarium
Aquarium is a role-playing game in which 2-3 people take part, and the rest act as observers, which allows some to “live” the situation, and others to analyze the situation from the side and “empathize” it.
Stages of implementation:
- 1. All participants are divided into small groups (2-3 people each).
- 2. Participants of one of the small groups sit down at the table (in the "aquarium") in the center of the hall (active working group), the leader offers them tasks for implementation and the necessary information. And the rest of the participants (passive working group) act as observers.
- 3. Participants in an active working group to complete the task must: - read aloud the situation-tasks; - discuss it in a group using the discussion method; - come to a common opinion in 3-5 minutes. Participants in a passive working group should listen at this stage of the event without interfering in the discussion process and observe.
- 4. Participants in an active working group after voicing a common opinion take their places, and participants in a passive working group discuss the following questions: - Do you agree with the opinion of the group that spoke out? - Was this idea reasoned enough? - Which of the arguments do you consider the most convincing?
Microphone
For motivation(the children say what they expect from the lesson)
- This is a way to make it clear to each student that he can do something useful for himself from the lesson, show that he can safely express his own opinion, talk about both personal successes and failures.
- The essence of the method is that students take turns answering questions. To defuse the situation, you can use a toy microphone or transmit any object, having agreed that it will play the role of a speaker.
To test the level of knowledge
To summarize opinion on the lesson
The features of the Interactive Method
Synergy of the teacher and the students
Managing of the process by the teacher
Motivation and the connection with the real life
Development of the personality of the students in parallel with the knowledge acquisition
Requirements to the Interactive Teaching Class Structure
- Motivation
Aim: To draw the students` attention to the problem/topic; «Brainstorm» can be used here
- The topic announcement/ Formulation of the expected results of the lesson
Without this stage a student would take the lesson as a game but not as a learning process
- Providing the necessary information
Aim: To prepare the students to the interactive activity
Cards that contain a description of the activity algorithm can be given to the students
- Interactive exercise
Aim: the assimilation of educational material, achieving the results of the lesson
Sequence of the interactive exercise: Instructing, distribution of roles, task execution, presentation of the results of the exercise
Reflexion
Aim: encouraging students to actively speak in connection with a particular situation. Thus, the interaction and cooperation of the teacher with the student will be realized, as well as an increase in the student’s interest in learning the language
IT Technologies in the Process of Teaching
The use of IT technologies can significantly increase the effectiveness of the process of teaching a foreign language.
Aspects of IT
implementation of visual support
semantization
Learning vocabulary
In the study of vocabulary, online flash cards are effectively perceived and remembered by students(can be found on UK teacher site (www. mes-English.com).
Such tasks such as Complete Word net (complete the vocabulary web), Complete the sentence (continue the sentence), Fill in the necessary word (insert the missing word) give the opportunity to control the attention of students, affect the emotional sphere of children, and allow to consolidate vocabulary on a specific topic.
Power Point Presentation
- a presentation helps to illustrate any performance both by the teacher and the student.
- students see a real practical result.
- students can show their abilities, hidden talents, find their model of demonstration, defend their position, opinion.
- presentation helps to test the level of formation of reading and speaking skills, and also develops the ability of students to find relevant information, to defend their point of view, to think creatively.
