After admission to the college, many students face with the problem of where to live during their studies: in a dormitory or in a rented apartment.

A dormitory, often shortened to dorm, in the United States is a residence hall consisting of sleeping quarters or entire buildings primarily providing sleeping and residential quarters for large numbers of people, often boarding school, college or university students. In the U.K. the word has an earlier, different but related meaning: it refers specifically to an individual room in which many people sleep, typically at a boarding school. The U.K. equivalent of the American word as applied to university buildings is hall of residence.

Most colleges and universities provide single or multiple occupancy rooms for their students, usually at cost.

Contemporary student housing varies depending on many factors such as the nature of settlement and living conditions.

The interaction of social factors in the formation of personality has a complex and contradictory nature, which reflects the complexity of social problems of human existence, the specificity of exposure to the pedagogical potential of the environment and circumstances, spontaneous and managerial and organizational components of the totality of influences on the personality of the individual.

The socio-educational factors have a great influence on the formation and development of personality. Factors in the social environment constitute an important foundation for the formation of the individual student's institutions of higher education.

Social factors of the formation of moral and aesthetic values of students in the dorm environment are those essential facts, which have a direct (or indirect) influence on the personality of the student.

The combination of different activities, their differentiation and recognition of the social significance of human life, its future objective leads to the comprehension of his "I", the acquisition of experience of active social activities.

The main characteristic of modern dormitories, making it possible to achieve effective results in education and training of students, of course, is to ensure its openness as a social institution. Dormitory is the center, absorbing all the existing positive opportunities not only for training, education and development of students, but also improving the efficiency of the educational process. There are relationships between the educational institution and society.

Leaving in the hostel is a joint life, leisure and self-learning activities of students, so harmonious relationships in the room are the necessary condition of personal well-being of each student.

That’s why in February 2009/10 academic year in the hostel № 6 of Kharkov National Automobile University a moral and psychological climate in the hostel was monitored.

89% of students living in a hostel called relations in a room cordial, 7% - rated the relationship as indifferent and 4% - as tense. Accordingly, 89% of respondents feel comfortable with roommates, not always comfortable - 11%. In hard times, students’ dormitories are expecting the help from their friends (81%) and parents (74%), 57% of boys and girls show independence in solving problems.

Educational process and living among a large number of students may have a negative impact on the psychological state of stress and reduce the overall vitality. Mental tension can be lessened by communicating with friends (80%), sports - 43%, theaters, exhibitions, discos and other cultural events - 39%, outings (37%), and doing their favourite things (33%). Only 45% of students living in the hostel estimated recreation and leisure as effective, 61% indicate good conditions for sports activities, 34% of respondents believe that the hostel has all conditions for the prevention of harmful habits.

The student committee usually works in every dormitory, which has a voice in making important decisions for the dorm, and organizes a varied program of social activities.

Foreign experience provides examples of brilliant solutions of residential townships, where there are excellent conditions for life. The list of the world's best universities in terms of tuition and accommodation include the leading universities of the U.S. and the UK.

The main advantages are a good organization of residence and contact with neighbours. The main disadvantage is that coexistence of different cultures cannot do without conflict. It happens that one needs to study or go to bed early, because he has some serious event, and the other have guests or a party.

The following measures to improve the moral and psychological climate of students are suggested:

1. to increase the number of cultural events - 20%;

2. to establish closer contact with the administration - 18,5%;

3. to conduct psychological studies - 4%.

In general, I can draw the following conclusions:

1. Hostels are a necessary component of student life. They need to be built, primarily to ensure the rights of youth to education and the maintenance of the status of Kharkov as a recognized scientific and educational complex. And this, according to respondents, is the task of the regional scale.

2. Today's situation is evaluated critically. The hostel in general is positioned as a place with a positive communicative climate, there is a good communication and feeling of the charm of the student union, they are cheap, but the life there is not adjusted perfectly, and - importantly - it's not a place where you can learn and grow professionally.

3. Answers indirectly showed a significant differentiation of students into two almost equal groups: "more optimistic" and "more pessimistic. Namely - focused on leisure and communication, on the one hand, and on training and professional development - on the other.
