I`d like to represent my illustration to William Shakespear`s tragedy “Romeo and Juliet”.
In this illustration I depicted a scene number 5 from the second act, and particularly that part of It when Lady Capulet is talking to her daughter Juliet trying to force her to marry Paris.
I should say that after my teacher encouraged me to take part in this contest, I started reading this book and learnt that the theme of relationships in a family is one of the most important in this play.
In my picture you can see a young beautiful Juliet sitting back to her mother. Their faces have a tense expression. Lady Capulet doesn`t know that her daughter has already secretly got married Romeo, the son of their enemy`s family Montague.
In my opinion, the tragedy of relations between the older and the younger generations in this play has a double nature. On the one hand, father and mother Capulet didn`t want to think about their daughter`s feelings and understand her. But, on the other hand, Juliet, in her turn, didn`t want to listen to her parents, she didn`t get their permission, broke the rules and married Romeo. All that led to a tragic ending.
Though the action of this famous play took place in Verona more than 400 years ago, it seems to me, that the problem of misunderstanding between parents and their children appears very often nowadays too. And I tried to express this idea in my illustration. As you can see, both women are wearing clothes typical of their time. While in the background there is a modern room with our contemporary furniture. I drew it on purpose to create a sense that Shakespear`s characters, their feelings and troubles still live among us.
