Occupying the northern third of the island of Great Britain, it shares a border  with England to the south and is bounded by the North Sea to the east, the Atlantic Ocean to the north and west, and the North Channel and Irish Sea to the southwest.

The national flag of Scotland, known as the St. Andrew's Cross, dates (at least in legend) from the 9-th century, and is thus the oldest national flag still in use. Since 1606 the St. Andrew's Cross has also formed part of the design of the Union Flag

There are numerous other symbols and symbolic artefacts, both official and unofficial, including the thistle, the nation's floral emblem.

The earliest report of a monster of Loch Ness appeared in the 7th century. Modern interest in the monster was sparked by the 22 July 1933 sighting, when George Spicer and his wife saw 'a most extraordinary form of animal' cross the road in front of their car. They described the creature as having a large body (about 1 m high and 8 m long), and long, narrow neck, slightly thicker than an elephant's trunk and as long as the 3–4 m width of the road; the neck had a number of undulations in it.
