What is Ash Wednesday?
ASH WEDNESDAY
IS A CHRISTIAN FESTIVAL.
Its official name is
“ Day of Ashes,”
so called because of the practice of rubbing ashes on one’s forehead in the sign of a cross. Since it is exactly 40 days (excluding Sundays) before Easter Sunday, it will always fall on a Wednesday—there cannot be an “Ash Thursday” or “Ash Monday.”

Customs and traditions of Ash Wednesday
Ash Wednesday officially begins Lent and the Easter cycle... Ashes from burned palms saved from the previous year are placed on the forehead of parishioners. This custom of placing ashes on the heads of people and, originally, the wearing of sackcloth is an ancient penitential practice common among the Hebrew At first this ritual of ashes, along with its original scriptural meaning, was not directly connected with the beginning of Lent. As early as the 300s, it was adopted by local churches as part of their practice of temporarily excommunicating or expelling public sinners from the community. These people were guilty of public sins and scandals such as apostasy, heresy, murder, and adultery
How people celebrate an Ash Wednesday today?
Many Christians will attend a religious service where the ashes are blessed by the church leader, and placed on their forehead. Christians believe this marks the physical and spiritual beginning of a personal Lent season in which 40 days of repentance will begin leading up to the celebration of Easter Sunday.
The actual moment when the forehead is marked initiates the beginning of lent for each individual person
The Ash sometimes comes from palm branches that were burned after the Palm Sunday service the previous year.
Ash is used because it is a symbol of death, because all bodies turn to ash or dust in the end. It helps Christians to remember that Lent is about preparing to remember that Jesus died.

When is Kissing Friday?
Kissing Friday always falls on the Friday after Ash Wednesday
What was the custom? :
English schoolboys were entitled to demand a kiss from schoolgirls without fear of punishment or rejection. If the schoolgirl agreed that was great for both of them however is she refused the boy was then allowed to pinch the girl on the bottom. This custom lasted until at least the 1940s
Local custom
In Leicestershire, Kissing Friday was called Nippy Hug Day and adult men joined the fun. If a woman refused to give up a kiss, the fellow “loused” or pinched her. (A curious reference to pinching off lice.) In some places, the “loused” woman was required to play temporary wife to the pincher, but it isn’t clear what that may have entailed. One has to wonder, however, if this tradition is related in any way to the custom Italian men have of pinching the bottoms of women they pass on the street
